Cursory reviews on Amazon mention fragile plastic with the grind chute and quality problems the finer you grind - - with these cheap "burr" grinders you get exactly what you pay for.

This looks like it uses the same design as the Mr coffee that I had. Recently upgraded to the Capresso Infinity and it is night and day better.

Honestly, I don't think it matters too much until you start making espresso at home. I doubt most people can taste the difference. These other grinders coffee experts recommend cost at least 5x-10x more than this 23 bucks one, and very debatable if they can last 5-10 times longer than this one, and very very debatable if it can improve the taste of the coffee by 5 times or more.

I've owned one of these for about 15 years -- came free with an iRoast2 coffee roaster that I got in about 2007 or so. Back then it was branded "Hearthware Supremo Coffee Mill" but it's the exact same thing, maybe they made some adjustments or something, no idea.

Anyway. Is it the best? Nope. Is it at least amazing? No. But will it at least make a decent espresso grind? Still no. But you know what -- I'm embarrassed to say that I've used it almost every day for 15 years and it's still going strong. The only reason I still have it is because I've been putting off spending the $400 for a new grinder for about... well, about 10 years. But let's not talk about that. Point is, it's not garbage -- it's not wonderful, either, but it's way better than those whirly bird grinders and for the price I paid ($0), I don't think 15 years of consistency is a bad value.

Comments like this, is what causes my heart rate to spike, I wonder what a person that thinks coffee it's "gross " , is doing here looking at a coffee grinder. I love coffee, so your comment seems a bit insulting, try a glass of water after a coffee to avoid most of your concerns.

I use an Italian style stove top coffee maker. Should I get this or the cheaper Krups grinder for finer ground coffee?

There are some diminishing returns, sure... but if you are at all serious about trying to make anything outside of french press taste good (or even a Mr. Coffee with a hot plate that is prone to burning your coffee)... then you should consider getting a better grinder. Like the above guy said, a baratza encore would be an end game grinder for any home not looking at getting into home espresso. I seem to remember there being a hand grinder that will do better than most electric grinders in in $70-$150 price range... but you'd have to look it up. James Hoffman did a great review of a bunch of them.

Again, if you're just doing french press (or even cupping) with some cheap beans, this burr grinder will do you fine. French press is a super forgiving brew method. If you do a side by side taste test of any other method, I'd be willing to bet you could tell a difference in a blind tasting.

Everytime I see one of these cheap grinders, there's people that say not to buy it and get something that cost $100-200. I don't need the best grinder - my wife's little sister is living with us while she finishes college and she works at Starbucks. She gets a free bag of beans every week and I'd like to buy a grinder for home use, so she doesn't have to find time during the day to do it at work. Will this be good enough to grind some beans and throw in a reusable K-Cup??

he/she is not looking for a coffee grinder, more like trying to find self-esteem.

Probably. Starbucks beans are very dark roast and k-cups don't brew great coffee anyways. The coffee you make probably won't be great, but if it tastes good to you thats all that matters. Have her grind some at work and do a side by side comparison (super important to have comparisons) to see if it matters for your K-Cups. Worst case, you're out $23 and decide to get something nicer.

EDIT: I also want to clarify, the $100-$200 grinders people recommend are not even close to the best grinders. Those are just the ones that are recommended for the general audience as a "These are good enough for home enthusiasts for anything but espresso."
