If you don't have a Costco, this is where it's time to reach out to a friend who has a Costco card and see if they'll hook you up!
I just priced out a random battery for a Honda CR-V.
Costco - $99 for an Interstate Battery brand battery
PepBoys - $150 - $25 rebate = $125 (Champion makes spark plugs - not batteries!
Walmart - $135 for no-name cheapo battery
See! Go with Costco for your car battery needs and save money!

Costco membership @ $60 for a one-off purchase wasn't cost effective for me.
Secondly, I didn't want to involve a family Costco member having to make a purchase and return the core.

Beware of the new generation of Walmart EverStart Maxx batteries.
I purchased one in 10/18 with a 3 year warranty and an additional 2 years prorated.
I was going to buy another one utilizing the prorate portion remaining, but the quality has been downgraded from 650CCA to 570CCA which is below GM's OEM part.
Very annoying considering the original battery is still an active listing on Walmart.com, albeit NOT available.
By virtue of reading customer reviews this practice has been going on for some time now because even last year people were complaining that the CCA had been reduced to 600.
BTW, the battery I purchased from Pep Boys was a whopping 15 cents more than Walmart before the $25 rebate so no saving for me by shopping at Wallyworld!

For me, Costco is too far away from me to justify a membership (which kinda sux honestly).
But when I priced out batteries, Costco always comes out cheaper and I would just hit up a family member to take me there...me toting a battery and handling everything else.
Your post might be very applicable to some SD'er and great for them!
Battery prices have FAR exceeded inflation and even college textbooks. 25 years ago, car batteries used to cost $25 and lead batteries are probably one of the most recycled items on the planet...and ;lets face it, the technology in car batteries has not increased one bit in 50 years. If anything, car batteries don't even last as long as batteries in the past would. I used to get 5-10 years on a car battery - now 3-5 years is the expectation.

Admittedly it would have been a cheaper option, but my son lives an hours drive away, his closest Costco is 12 miles away and he has just become a Dad for the first time so he has enough to contend with.
Damn kids!

As to the battery itself - there hasn't been ANY noticeable difference that I can tell in the technology. Maybe they're using something different inside the battery between the lead plates but they still only do what they've been doing forever. Again, I'm talking about a simple lead battery...Not that Gel thingy battery or deep marine batteries, etc...
Batteries still need to be topped off with distilled water (assuming you can) and they still produce that green corrosion on the battery terminals like always...Ain't nothing changed with batteries except they don't seem to last as long...
I'm no expert on batteries, how they work internally, etc... Just a simple shade-tree mechanic that can change a battery, water pump, brakes, radiator, head gasket, etc... And I have stayed at a Holiday Inn once!
;-)
EDIT: BTW, Your user name would be perfect for an auto parts store chain or junkyard!

Given that fact it was cheaper @ Pep Boys with a rebate so it was a no brainer IMO.
