Metabo HPT is the new name for Hitachi. Reputable brand and while not as known as Bosch for routers they're routers are good. This model is compatible with the 18v/36v MultiVolt battery line.

Note: also $99 at Lowe's

If you're already in the Metabo system, this is a great little tool. A buddy of mine has one and I would say it is pretty comparable to my corded 1.25hp Bosch Colt trim router. The big negative, and this only applies if you use trim routers like I do, is that Metabo doesn't sell any larger edge guides or plunge bases for this model currently. There may be something out there that fits, but I am unaware of it. I used to not care for trim routers with all the accessories, but I have a router table now that does my bigger work. I enjoy being able to use the trim router in a plunge setup or on larger pieces where putting it on the router table may not be an option.

Trim routers are smaller, less powerful woodworking routers used to shape profiles on the edge of wood. Using jigs, tables, guides or templates you can add other functions such as dados, dovetails, create identical shapes to original, joint and plane rough lumber...

Metabo is getting lower quality every year. You could find a plug in Makita for less than this if you don't absolutely need cordless, which you usually don't when routering (I use corded for probably 20!hours a month at work and cord isn't a huge issue in a workshop, not like you need to take this thing on a 30 ft ladder or something)

As another poster said, this is what used to be Hitachi's power tools line (hence the 'HPT' in the name). They merged that division with a German company called Metabo about five years ago, and then spun it off as a separate company with new owners a couple years later.

A router hollows out pieces of wood by creating patterns or designs on edges or on surface of wood.

Are these good for creating openings? I cut a window opening using a sawzall and it came out pretty clean, but I think I saw a video where someone used a router and it was perfectly straight.

A router with a flush cutting bit is a great way to get a straight line. A full size router would be tricky on a window, so this is probably your best router option. You basically hog out the hole with another tool, then setup a straight edge that you can follow with a trim bit.

As far as peeps saying you can do the same thing with a corded router, you most assuredly can. However, if you are picking up a router frequently, you're going to eventually see the usefulness of a cordless unit. I have several corded trim routers, and am still considering grabbing this.
