If you pick these up in store, make sure to open the box before you leave. Apple removed the security seals on the boxes to be more environmentally friendly, so they are being targeted by thieves/scammers as the box can easily be opened without anyone noticing.

Recently picked up a leather case from Best Buy, got home and box was empty. Went back to the store and was given a replacement which was also empty. They checked the three other they had in stock and they were all empty. Gave me a refund so ordered one on Amazon. The box was not empty but the leather case had been swapped with a cheap generic case. Finally gave up and paid more at the Apple store.

These new Apple leather cases (since the iPhone 12 or thereabouts) are coated with a stain resistant coating that stops the natural aging and patina of leather. As the coating wears away at the edges it starts to patina but it looks terrible as the flat surfaces don't age.

The Best Buy Horween Platinum cases can be found open box on eBay for around or less than $20 and aren't coated. They're also made with leather which is of a high quality rather than whatever Apple is using. Apple's cases don't even smell like leather.

I actually own the midnight one. I stumbled on the deal looking for Dark Cherry. Its nice, my midnight one is developing a nice patina.

I've sworn by OtterBox cases for nearly a decade. I'm not buying OtterBox again. Their quality has really gone downhill. From plastic discoloring in a few months to the same weak point near the charging port across 3 generations of devices, it's just not worth it anymore
