A quick Google is telling me that 150k Membership Rewards points is worth over $3k. Is that true? But only if redeeming them for gift cards/travel? If cash, substantially less?

Are these statement still true (I haven't done this sort of thing for a while):

* Best way to maximize value is to use for travel or gift cards that I will actually use
* Next best way is to buy gift cards and sell them
* Last way (least efficient) is to cash them out on a reputable "buy CC points" website

Here's how to redeem American Express Platinum card points:
Book travel through Amex. Just log in to your Amex account via the Amex travel portal, then search for the transportation and accommodations you want to book. There will be an option to pay with points at the check-out.
Transfer points. You can actually move your points at a 1:1 ratio to 17 airline and 3 hotel loyalty programs. To do so, log in to your Amex account and choose your loyalty program. Just keep in mind that you have to transfer in 1,000-point increments.
Get gift cards. Log in to Amex's gift card reward page to make your selection. There are dozens of options to choose from, including restaurants, movie theatres and airlines.
Donate. You can make a charitable donation with your rewards points by logging in at Amex's JustGiving page.
Amazon Shop with Points. If you connect your Amex card to your Amazon account, you can use their Shop with Points system to spend points on merchandise. But you'll only get 0.7 cents per point using this method.
Statement credit. You can use your points to pay for charges on your statement, at a rate of 0.6 cents per point, by logging in to your Amex account.
Shopping. You can also spend your points toward Ticketmaster purchases (0.6 cents per point), Rite Aid purchases, Bestbuy.com, Staples.com and a few other sites (0.7 cents per point). Plus, you can use them at a rate of 1 cent each toward NYC Taxi rides.

Like all CC point systems, they rig the game imo. Yes you can get up to 2x the normal value (.01 a point) if you book travel through them or trade the points with other frequent flier partners. That assumes of course that a. you travel a fair amount and b. you use their service to book it which will almost always likely cost you more than if you did it yourself via Orbitz or where ever.

As to gift cards, the ones they give you a deal on tend to be near worthless ones like Staples (everything is over priced there by default) and fast food joints or less popular stores. It is not like they will give you a discount on Amazon gift cards. Selling gift cards (even the crappy ones) involves a lot of work and some risk (some people will try to scam you with gift cards via EBay or whatever platform) and obviously you need to sell them at a discount for anyone to be interested, so it is just an enormous waste of time imo.

Imo, unless you travel a lot you likely should value the points for a statement credit and anything you can get and use above the penny a point default is a bonus.
