Great price for a great knife aimed at the tactical crowd. But it does have a few flaws:

D2 is only hardened to 58HRC, which is a minor crime, IMHO, since D2 can achieve much higher hardness. I've got knives in D2 hardened to more like 62HRC, which will hold an edge longer, but be a bit more brittle for really hard use which is exactly what this knife is designed for. So, maybe 58HRC was as far as they took the hardening on purpose.
I'm not a fan of the seat belt cutter because it's positioned right at the bottom of the pocket clip, were the material of your pants is likely to slip under and cut your pants. This is a problem I've read about from several owners.
Glass breaker sticks out the back of the knife, which may be an important tool for a first responder, but is a bit much to have sticking up out of my pocket on an EDC knife.
AT-XR lock sticking up on the spine is questionable to me, and could lead to accidently disengagement. Also, with the knife being tip up carry (which is my preference) but it does mean that the lock will be sticking up and rubbing against your hand and everything in your pocket. Flipper tabs on a knife can cause the same problem. Overall, I'm ambivalent on needing to be able to lock my knife shut if it has a decent detent, but being able to do so is mandatory if you are employing the seat belt/strap cutter and don't want to accidently deploy the blade while doing so.

This beast is still a really great knife, just maybe not what some may want in a comfortable to carry EDC. Appears to be quite popular with the military, tactical, first responder crowd or anyone who just likes big, solid knives. If you carry it on a belt or in a pack then most of the negative I've mentioned disappear. I'm a fan of the BA look of basic black with the classic red accents. And, this is a screaming deal as not too long ago this knife was selling for $100+.

SOG is doing a lot to up their game, IMHO, after slipping for little a bit.

What an absolutely stupid response.

When buying a knife, I like to know if the quality of something is good or not. I guess this is slickdeals where it only matters if it's cheap. If that's the case, go buy a plastic butter knife and leave the more quality products to those who know what they're talking about.

This website attracts some weird people.

The tip is thin and easily broken on this particular knife, and the seatbelt Cutter is at the wrong angle to actually work well. Also, the glass breaker is weakly embedded in the plastic handle scale. Also also, the glass breaker can gash your hand when in your pocket if your not careful. Also, better keep it locked because it has a tendency to accidentally open.

But, it's cheap

When a knife has fundamental design flaws, pointing them out so others will know what they are getting is not nitpicking. Why do you think this knife used to sell at around $100 and is now $40?

Oh, I forgot to mention in my first post that SOG left the portion of the handle right under the pocket clip rough rather than smoothing it out. With the aggressive texture on the handle, it's going to be grinding a nice little hole in your pants pocket right where it's pinched by the pocket clip. That's if you don't cut your pants on the strap cutter first.

Yeah, SOG has been slipping for several years now. I think they are attempting a comeback, but many of their models aren't there yet. Including this one. But, at $40, if this floats your boat anyway, then climb on board.
What would yoy say is a good pocket knife for a beginner?

If it were my first knife, I'd probably but the Gerber Doubledown butterfly machete. Then, after realizing that it is not as practical as I'd like, I pick up a Gerber Mini Fast Draw. After loving that knife for a while, I'd look towards buying several other knifes to fit various other nitches. Then, I'd buy a.... So on and so forth

That's actually not the lock on the spine. That is the safety switch, which disables opening completely.

Yeah, it's a safety switch designed to disable the AT lock. But it's positioned where it's easily to accidentally disengage halfway and allow the knife to open anyway. I've seen several reviews demonstrating exactly this flaw. [youtube.com]

That totally depends on what you want. I tend to recommend the Ontario Rat I [amazon.com], Rat II [amazon.com] or any of the Ganzo Firebird knives in 440C or D2 [powercutlery.com]. Those are solid budget choices and you can upgrade later after you've got a better handle on exactly what you want out of a knife. If a knife that catches your attention. It might help to watch a few YouTube knife reviews. Make sure you know your local knife laws, too.

I have one of these. Haven't really carried it as much as I probably should. I got it because of the seatbelt cutter option. I liked that it used the blade of the knife for the cutter instead of a secondary dedicated blade like I have seen on several other "rescue" type knives.

Not a bad knife... SOG makes some quality stuff and this is one of their flagship models that have been around for years. I got one when I first started collecting but I returned it. I just thought it felt kinda cheaply made... don't get me wrong this blows out most knives at the $40 price point but the FRN handle makes it feel a bit lightweight (good or bad depending on your preferences). Also its a bit too tactical looking for my tastes. I would go with something like a Kershaw Cryo/Rat Ontario if you want something more EDC friendly... you're gonna get less quality steel but its a great all-around knife for edc beginners.

I definitely agree on the "feels cheaply made comment" with regards to the weight. The material they made the handle out of is EXTREMLY lightweight. It feels like cheap plastic, although I have never had an issue with it. Makes the knife feel like there isn't anything to it. It doesn't seem to affect the usability or durability of the knife though.

Can I expect the same quality from SOG today that I have in my 20 year old SOG multi-tools?

Lost my last Kershaw that lasted me years as a DD. Received this on Monday, it's been fantastic and I actually like it more than the last. Not really a knife guy so to speak but this will do just fine. Feels solid, nice heft, and the quick deploy feels good to me. For being made in China, it has a premo feel to it. Would recommend.
