I've had this for about 2 years now, and it's extremely temperamental. The Google assistant works about 25% of the time. Other times it'll cut you off mid-request or just not do anything after you finish your request. The display is also starting to go on it.

I got mine for free, so it's worked well enough for that.

I don't think it's a matter of doing other stuff for most people, it's just the preference to have a clock that's independent of a phone.

I totally agree. I have both and a color version is the worst smart clock we have. The display is just too bright and useless. This simpler version is much better

serious question: what does this do that any generic smartphone can't these days? i pretty much sleep with my phone next to me and use its alarm to wake me when needed.

I can see the clock without my glasses. I also like to put the clock across the room, so I have to get out of bed to interact with it.

You can turn down the brightness. I believe you swipe up from the bottom. At full brightness it is a small sun. We have ours all the way down and use a black background.

ok, that's never been a problem for me. but in your case the first reason makes sense (although there are apps than can use the entire screen real estate to show time) but the 2nd - can put your phone across the room too??
