Things I like:
- Google assistant for managing alarms, playing ambient noise, dimming lights, etc
- Night light built into the back
- Looks nice

Smart clock plus a light bulb are $5 more. Which is better option for Google home/alarm clock replacement?

The (presumably) newer model with Alexa can also be found for $20 I believe, but I personally prefer Google over Alexa.
I owned two of them, and they both did this. NUMEROUS reports claim the same thing. YMMV, but I absolutely cannot recommend these things. That being said, I have the "upgraded" one that is an actual screen (like a real Echo device), and it's fine.
To remedy it I popped open the front plastic bit to get at the "segmented" display (its just leds underneath a diffusion layer) and added a layer of red tint film over the internal part of the display. Closed it back up, and configured it to run at 100% brightness all the time. Now its a little more old school red lcd looking but thats fine, and totally reasonable in the dark.
Heres a tear down which should help with getting into it: https://www.edn.com/teardown-diss...assistan
