I've used this clock as an alarm clock in my bedroom for the past 2 years.
Things I like:
Google assistant for managing alarms, playing ambient noise, dimming lights, etc
Night light built into the back
Looks nice
Things I don't like:
Display brightness is controlled by an ambient light sensor - the screen is fine during the day, but at night the screen dims and many parts of the display simply don't work. Many times I've woken up in the middle of the night and not been able to tell what time it is.

In the Google Home app find night mode under Notifications and Digital Wellbeing and set the LED brightness at night.
Can also setup a custom automation at night you'd add the command "set clock brightness to 70%" as example and it should do that

Thanks for that! I found the settings you mentioned. I had to set it around ~40% brightness for the missing LED parts to show up. It's relatively bright so I'll see if it's a distraction tonight

I really like this clock and would recommend it over the other digital clocks that are fancier. It does everything I need it to - tell time, and weather and has google assistant.
The (presumably) newer model with Alexa can also be found for $20 I believe, but I personally prefer Google over Alexa.

I really wish this device would stop getting posted to SD. There are RAMPANT reports of the display not functioning properly after some use. It's not "dead" per se', more like a software problem that doesn't light up the appropriate sections for some reason (a reset will fix it temporarily).
I owned two of them, and they both did this. NUMEROUS reports claim the same thing. YMMV, but I absolutely cannot recommend these things. That being said, I have the "upgraded" one that is an actual screen (like a real Echo device), and it's fine.
I bought 3 of these last year and all 3 have defects now with different parts of the screen at different dimming levels and so the clock is unreadable. It was great when it worked though.
Also bought 3 and cannot tell the time during the night, which is when I need it the most I have purchased the ones with the screen now as those don't have the problem.
I have two of these and overall really like them. One has been working fine for maybe 2 years no issues, the other had the dim led issue. It worked fine at higher brightness, but it was too bright for me at night.
To remedy it I popped open the front plastic bit to get at the "segmented" display (its just leds underneath a diffusion layer) and added a layer of red tint film over the internal part of the display. Closed it back up, and configured it to run at 100% brightness all the time. Now its a little more old school red lcd looking but thats fine, and totally reasonable in the dark.
Even with the defects, I love the concept of this clock. I wish more products were simple like this: just a basic alarm clock, but with the assistant built in.
How about classic, digital wrist watch, but connects to your phone and buzzes for notifications? I don't need a complex fitness tracker and 93 different watch faces with a 14 hour battery. Instead, I'd rather just have a basic watch with a month-long battery that tells me I got a text message.
I want a reliable, simple infotainment system in my car.
I want a waterproof and shatterproof phone.
I want a blow-up doll that doesn't keep deflating.

Smart clock plus a light bulb are $5 more. Which is better option for Google home/alarm clock replacement?
