At this price, buy 2. For an easy backup solution, (non critical) I just copy my 24/7 version every few months to the other copy I have unused and sitting in the drawer and then put it back in the drawer. When the 24/7 one "breaks" I will just pull out the copy and start using it, and buy another "drawer copy"

Which reminds me...

I have the 4TB version, shucked it and it's been running 24/7 for about 2 years. Fingers crossed!

Of course, YMMV.

Seagate brand is okay. You just need to be mindful you are sacrificing reliability to save some $$$.

The western digital deal was better yesterday. That being said due to the fact of having multiple Seagate consumer grade drives failing on me. My last WD that partially failed lasted me 7 years. I had multiple Seagate drives fail on me within luckily the one year warranty period but the data could not be recovered. One of the replacements failed within a year and couldn't be replaced due to the fact that the warranty period is a rolling period from when you bought it. Should be illegal. Pay the extra and get m.2. Just don't go with consumer grade Seagate. (I didn't invest in Seagate due to the fact). Lol

I normally love Seagate, prefer them over WD. Bought 3 of these during the last sale and 2 completely failed (one while doing a large copy to it, right after buying it, the other went totally unreadable/recognizable after about 2 months)

I've never had any Seagate troubles before this drive.
Welcome to the club. $90 for 5TB mechanical drives? I wouldn't buy it even if it were for the price of 3 because if I'm buying the drive for redundancy given Seagate's reliability record (anecdotally from my experience), a drive smaller than 10TB wastes SATA/USB ports. Just don't think it's a deal at this price.

CMR Or SMR?
I think all of Seagate's 2.5" drives are SMR: https://www.seagate.com/internal-...-smr-list/

This is not designed for 24/7, I would go with a WD Red or Purple or Ultrastar
Nah I ran this 24/7 for 4 month straight, no problem at all

Shuckable?
Can this Seagate drive be shucked? Yes. But it's a portable (2.5 inch) hard drive NOT the larger desktop 3.5 inch drives that people buy and shuck for use in an NAS. And these portable drives tend to be SMR too.

Repost of info I posted to the last thread (this past December) on this 5TB portable Seagate drive. As always your experience may be different due to different hardware and other factors.
--------------------------------------------------------

On several PC's, using USB 3.0, the Seagate One Touch 5TB is showing approx (from Crystal DiskMark 1GB test): https://i.imgur.com/0lGhDUA.jpg

Read: 124.24 MB/s
Write 57.96 MB/s

For comparisons sake a 5TB Seagate Backup Plus Hub (3.5 inch) desktop external HDD purchased years ago from Costco gets; Read 130 - Write 76.6. A several year old 2.5 inch WD Blue HDD gets; Read 97.58 - Write 69.71 in an external USB 3.0 Ineteck enclosure. An older 1TB Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 drive gets; Read: 89.13 - Write 90.44. So, the read values from this 5TB Seagate One Touch are good, it's the write speed that is less than stellar when compared to other drives on my PC's. Likely due to this drive being SMR. That WD Blue drive was marginally better in the write department but worse in the read department than this Seagate drive. Go figure.

Seems the general consensus seems to be many if most of the larger 2.5 inch HDD external drives are SMR these days.

Some general comments about this drive:

Crystal DiskInfo results of the 5TB Seagate One Touch: https://i.imgur.com/7MYj85s.jpg

The 5TB Seagate One Touch comes out of the box formatted for exFAT. The drive out of the box has two partitions on it. a 200MB EFI(FAT32) partition and the main exFAT partition with a total capacity of 4657.3GB. MiniTool Partition Wizard image showing this information: https://i.imgur.com/Yik4ukS.jpg

The product insert / user manual does state: "Mac: For Time Machine, the hard drive must be formatted for HFS+ for Mac." Something to be aware of if you are a Mac Time Machine user.
--------------------------------------------------------

Edit to add: Just ran an other Crystal Disk Mark test on the drive and got much better write results and previously.

I bought this over a year ago at the same price. Not sure if it's a deal these days.

I primarily bought it for photo backup and no issues whatsoever.

In the Pre-TB days, Seagate made a solid hard drive. This was back when most people were still using dial-up. Today, they make a drive that has one of the highest failure rates out there. Yes, Costco has a lifetime warranty. But if that is what you are depending on, you better either have the data backed up somewhere else....or consider it disposable. Do all drives fail? Yes....but I have some 2TB Samsungs that lasted 12 years before I retired them. I am not even sure the shape of a Seagate drive will last 12 years. Will there be people out there who get years out of a Seagate? Sure......people do get lucky. But you will find far more people who will see the drive crash than say a WD Red...or WD Black...or Toshiba..or Hitachi

I've been using one since the last sale. It's been fine. There's bound to be bad in both brands. Need more data to definitely say which is better. But it's been fine for me.
If you buy in-store, hard drives last 10 times longer. None of my 10 store drives failed from store. Still running cold after 2-10 years without drop or toss in-house. Make sure the box isn't damaged. I only bought a one online last month for a steal deal.

Hard drives don't like to be dropped and shipping isn't always gentle hence half of drives failing. traveling it will kill spinning drives.

This COSTCO Seagate isn't really a good deal. You can get $44 WD 4TB drives at WD eBay. Got one, usually 50 left.

Get a in store, ssd online, cheapest ebay WD

$44 WD 4TB sounds like a scam.

I have a couple of these and they work fine.

I have Seagate drives that I've been bulletproof and ones that have failed. I've had western digital drives that I've been bulletproof and ones that have failed. I have found no brand is significantly better than the other. Sometimes you get unlucky, sometimes you're lucky.

I don't see using 10TB at home in the next several years, but are you implying you can get it for under $100? Or are you just rambling incoherently about a product you don't personally have a need for?

Mind you, I think this drive was a similar price a couple years ago, I wish prices were going down, but .. they don't seem to be for now. From this point forward it's a question whether inflation will outpace innovation or not.
