I actually like hubs as they keep my wifi device list shorter.
I wish my TPLink switches had a hub like my Lutron switches

At 60W you will find other bulbs that are similar in light output but none that exceed these and the downside to "hubless" platforms is that the simplified wi-fi chip they use is prone to issues (ive tried several brands). Zigbee on the other hand was designed for this application. Ive never once had a Hue bulb 'lose connection' that required a power cycle but the other wifi bulbs do pretty often. People balk at the thought of 30 to 50 per bulb when you can go to costco and buy a full RGB smart bulb for 10.... until they actually see them side by side

Still more than I want to pay but I'm feeling frisky. In for one.

I've been wanting to give these a shot. $80 shipped is low enough for me. Nice find!

I have a Phillips Hue hub already, and have been satisfied with the setup. I bought mine 5 years ago. However, knowing what I know now, I would not purchase a hub and bulbs again.

You can purchase bulbs from other manufacturers without proprietary hubs for much less money. After initial set up, you'll never touch the hub or the app again if you manage the lights with Alexa, Google Home, or HomeKit. The hub is something else you have to keep plugged in somewhere, and the Phillips bulbs won't work without it.

For the money you can buy more S e n g l e d or other bulbs, and never mess with a hub. Also, you'll feel no obligation to buy overpriced bulbs that work with your Phillips hub.
I was wondering why these seemed so expensive to me. I have some urlhasbeenblocked(?) and was wondering how much better the Philips bulbs were.

Maybe. Philips bulbs can work without the hub depending on your home automation setup. However, they won't work as nicely or as beautifully.

Unlike certain products where the cheapos are reasonably good, especially for the price, I've found Philips to be one of the few things that can command the premium. Granted, I entered the ecosystem with the old HD clearance $30 white ambiance starter kit, so there wasn't much premium to begin with. But the light capabilities and seamless integration with things (I use hubitat) makes it worth it for me.

If all you want is "hey google, turn on the lights," you can definitely do that more cheaply. I have a few wifi smart bulbs (feit and simplyconserve, which might actually be feit, too). The colors suck compared to Hue and you can't do cool light scenes.

Yup. I've had the cheap stuff. My only regret is not getting hue from the get go.

When you run 45+ Bulbs, hubs are a must. Hue hub and smarthings hub you can run/setup a whole house with 100+ devices with ease. Also, work near flawlessly.
Ive owned both in bulk. Hue is worth it.

As long as youre ok with hearing her say "sorry, it looks like [half of] your lights cant turn on right now." laugh out loud I love that shes precise but i wish there was a 'try harder' command because i still have too many non-hue bulbs mucking up my lighting

I've never had wifi bulbs give me any connection issues or other ones. I've had them for a couple years, brands wyze and lifx.
