Just received my L5P from previous deal 10 days ago, it's one of the best game laptop I've tested:

1. 32G Samsung 1Rx8 memory, save you energy to buy aftermarket replacement for better performance.
2. 2T SSD (1T x2 ) in AHCI mode, not in raid, good to sell one or use in other place if not need.
3. Manufactured on Feb 2022, yet RTX 3070 still using Samsung vram, very rare.
4. The cooling system is nothing but impressive, I can gaming in quiet mode yet still keep R5800H running 4Ghz with just 70c, my returned Alienware m15 R5 will keep burning at 95c and started to throttle to 3.5Ghz.

Some Tips:
1. Don't install nvidia driver above 496.49, your screen brightness will be set to max everytime it resume from sleep.
2. Lenovo's extended service plan is cheap, 3 years for $80 w/ coupon "remote10" compare to other brand mostly cost $250-300ish.
3. Fn + L to turn off cover led
4. Don't repaste it, it's using very high performance thermal paste from honeywell 7950, It's designed to last for years, anything other than liquid metal will give you even worse results.
My legion 5, and I assume like others, have vents on sides and back. Fan turns on and off when needed.

Got this just last week, pretty solid laptop. Just a few things I've noticed.

1. 32 GB RAM is good, it is still single rank so if you want that 3% performance the next best thing would be the fury impacts but even those are becoming rare and expensive. The other kits may be dual ranks but watch for the JEDEC timings as they become looser.

2. Power Supply is huge! 300W brick, not used to it since I had a GS65 previously with a slim. You can however opt for PD over USB-C and get one of those 100W GAN if you want to use it more for office mode. Ive seen 230W slims but they may got hotter if you're trying to pull close to max that.

3. You can increase battery life by setting it to quiet mode, use the amd iGPU, and there's a command to unlock a power setting to turn off boost. This will keep your temps low in turn your fans quieter. This is again mostly for office use as most of you will want it maxed for gaming.

4. Display is beautiful! There is a 10bit mode but it's probably just 8+2frc. Play around with it. Set fps cap to 162 to keep gsync in range. Usually set it to 60Hz/iGPU only in office settings.

5. If replacing parts, keep them. You may need them for warranty as Lenovo wants you to have all original parts correct me if I'm wrong. Only thing I'll probably be changing for now is probably the wifi as it came with MediaTek.

Lottery you may find:

SSD: Ranking: Samsung 980 Pro > SK Hynix Gold/WD Black > WD Greens
RAM: I got 32GB Samsung Single Ranks.... (Ranking: Usually any Dual Rank ram but HyperX Fury DR is the go to since ram timings is on JEDEC if your system doesnt do XMP)
WIFI: Ranking: Intel >>> MediaTek/RealTek
Screen: CSOT T3 MNG007DA1-8 > 1-6
1-8 usually 500-525 nits
1-6 usually 460-480 nits. So got lucky with that one.

GPU: The 3070 Samsung > Micron. Got lucky with this one too.

Only thing I'm swapping is the MediaTek Wifi. The RAM I'll hold off till I find a good deal on some hyper x and want a little bit increase, everything else seems good for now Big Grin
Which LCD Panel did you end up with?

I received mine from previous deal, manufactured on Feb 2022, it's CSOT T3 MNG007DA1-8, I did a i1 Pro test, it's brightness 500-520 nits and 100% sRGB color gamut, so far matching the description:

Attachment 11269099

Attachment 11269102
Hmm okay, thanks for the information. I got mine from a previous deal as well, but it came with some marks on the screen, so I was debating about exchanging it but wasn't sure how the panel lottery was. Mine has the same panel as yours.

I got mine shipped from walmart on a deal around 2/12/2022. Here is what I ended up with and my take on it:

Display
---------------
~500nit
https://www.panelook.com/NE160QDM...50491.html

The "HDR" at up to ~500nit is really eye pleasing in games but it lacks the contrast even at ~1260:1 to allow even max highlights of 500. You have to tone it down with HDR max brightness and HDR brightness or white point controls in games or the darker areas will look washed out / pale /grey~white-ish. Still, once tweaked, it's quasi-HDR or "SDR+" looks very appreciably better than ~ 250nit reference SDR on FX lighting in games (magic in rpgs, fire pits, etc.) and general lighting really pops.

Overall a very solid shell, lid, hinges. Great array of ports on the back which are a lot more accessible. Great cooling solution (for hsf cooling) especially given the hardware/hardware temps it has to cool. Quasi-HDR screen is a big upgrade compared to SDR even though you have to limit it lower than peak in game's settings in order to avoid portions of the screen washing out or going pale to too great of a degree. The 16:10 1600p screen is very crisp and detailed ppi/PPD wise and gives a lot more desktop/app real-estate than 1080p, a bit more than even 1440p. Very good performance at 1600p in games and even games like elden ring on an external 4k screen with VRR.

I deploy mine from a xps laptop backpack and use an active cooling tray [amazon.com], especially when gaming. I also use a logitech MX ergo trackball mouse [amazon.com] so I don't need mouse travel space and I don't have to use the trackpad. I dislike using trackpads in general and prefer to sit more "throne style" when I can. I also linked a PS4 controller to the laptop that is the same color as the hand rest part, sort of gunmetal grey. Works great for elden ring.
Interesting, thanks for the detailed information. What was your machine's date of manufacture? It's on the white sticker on the edge of the box it came in.

I have the CSOT -8 panel and I would say that the dark scene detail is a little disappointing; I have to really crank up the brightness more than I would like while (competitive) gaming in order to see enemies even if the in-game gamma setting is maxed out. This gets a little painful after sunset.

Can you relate to this experience too?

I play games with settings more for the aesthetic look rather than a scoring advantage so I can't say the same. I actually prefer areas that are supposed to be dark to look dark rather than give me some kind of darkvision UAV. However I understand if you mean dark detail is just an ink blot rather than normal scene gradations of dark that scenes in a movie should have, yet in a game.

Being an IPS without FALD it's no OLED or anything but it looks good to me in games once tweaked - better than SDR. To be honest I've only played HDR games so far as I prioritize those (and also use Auto HDR when possible on SDR games). If I don't dial down the HDR brightness in games, large general areas of the screen will be pale and washed out. Once dialed in and toned down some, it doesn't wash out horribly and you get some really nice highlights/color volumes that are still much higher than SDR on things like flames, magic/magic item FX, glowing tech items and tech FX in games, other bright environmental objects etc. Even brightly colored foliage and grasses, armors, etc look better.

Like you said, you won't get the full ~ 1260:1 contrast ratio until you are nearing the peak brightness of the screen so your best use scenario would be in a brighter environment, somewhat ironically as HDR is usually best viewed in a dim to dark room. In your "too bright for dark room" scenario you could consider using bias lighting behind the screen. There are small yet bright small base or clip on LED lights (wall powered or usb powered) that you can buy. They are various sizes but the light on the end of the bendable arms can be as small as a finger yet still quite bright.

A few small yet bright usb lights at a glance, there are a lot of others available:

https://www.amazon.com/Clip-Light...07NKRPZXN/

https://www.amazon.com/Daffodil-U...00BWTYMPM/

You didn't specify what resolution you were running but I'll also mention that if you don't run native resolution, the non-native rez can appear more "muddy" overall and have worse details in muddier blacks so I would definitely try to stick to 2560x1600 and see if it looks any better.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Your other option is to buy a separate screen and keep the whole thing in a backpack or duffel bag - then deploy the whole setup more like a portable desktop. There are some small portable 120Hz or higher screens on amazon that have VRR/g-sync but I don't know if any HDR ones have both and what resolutions so you might have some tradeoffs there between those three features compared to a small ~ (e.g.24") or less desktop screen.

To me, if you really want to be competitive you'd be deploying a full set of desktop peripherals - gaming mouse and mouse pad, speakers/headphones with mic, a gaming keyboard with mechanical switches, maybe another input device, and an active cooling tray. So throwing another slim portable screen into the kit wouldn't be so crazy for when you are away from home at a remote location like a hotel room, remote work space, someone else's house, or a different room in your home location. I don't think most people would be "competitive gaming" in mobile environments like coffee shops and common halls. At your home base desktop setup, hooking this up to an external screen shouldn't be a problem for most people either.

Going with a mini-itx in a backpack/duffel bag along with a portable screen or a small desktop screen is prob a better build for competitive gaming. It can have a full power gpu and better and less noisy cooling. It's more expensive, however it has a better upgrade path as well. You'd lose the light/desktop use scenario of this laptop when not using it as a gaming machine but you could have a cheap laptop or tablet+keyboard thrown into the kit for that.

. . . . . . . . . . . .

This screen is good for some quasi-HDR / "SDR plus" gaming, auto HDR enabled SDR gaming, and SDR gaming. It's no OLED or FALD IPS though. I swap between a LG C1 4k vrr OLED and the integrated 1600p laptop screen regularly. Without FALD or OLED, you will have a hard time getting away from "blacks look grey in a dark room" on most portable/laptop screens.

I;m ok with subpar inkiness, but it's the "dark detail is just an ink blot rather than normal scene gradations of dark" that is disappointing.

It's tough to find anything with high contrast , detail in darks (along with 120Hz+, VRR/g-sync, HDR or quasi-HDR, 1440p or higher etc.) on a laptop, let alone in the $1500 and less category, or even most if not all of the portable mini-hdmi or usb-c external screens that aren't actual desktop screens.

I'd still give using bias lighting a shot as it will likely improve it, at least somewhat, by allowing you to use higher brightness levels. One of those articulating antenna-like armed usb lights you could put behind the laptop screen while you have it open. It would create bias lighting even if you had it pointed at the lid from behind it.

I'd also consider trying reshade or nvidia freestyle. Some games ban anything that edits settings though, particularly competitive online ones so I'd be careful to look into how that game treats freestyle or reshade before doing so.
You'd probably have more luck with freestyle in regard to bans since it's part of the geforce experience so is more mainstream. That is, as long as your particular game or games have freestyle support. Incidentally freestyle was designed with the help of the author of reshade if you weren't aware, it's just nvidia's built in version with some simple sliders.

I've had great success tweaking SDR games with reshade or free-style to make them look much better aesthetically with more brilliant color (without being neon torch mode) and better black balance (among other visual settings tweaks) on my previous 32.5" LG 850gk 1440p g-sync desktop monitor and later a 48 LG CX oled. It's worthwhile to use either reshade or freestyle on any screen. Both of those apps remember settings on a per game basis and they are easy to tweak.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

You also might want to look into CRU utility (use at your own risk) to set the nvida gpu's output to ~ 500nit, then use auto-HDR for the games that support it.

This is the post CRU edit for an LG CX which made it output at 800nit peak. Otherwise windows has no idea what the HDR scale is and will default to 4000nit scale which compresses the top end unnecessarily (which can cause issues with loss of detail though that is the top end of the scale).

https://preview.redd.it/0r0lxzddxzx71.png?width=1531&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4c8807f0909e17a95492c0b... [redd.it]

I haven't tried that on the laptop though so use at your own risk. It should work though since you define which gpu and display in cru. Here is the CRU settings for an LG OLED:
https://preview.redd.it/tqjdutxae7n81.png?width=1873&format=png&auto=webp&s=530d9e4bb0feb7b28c15e6a0... [redd.it]

I'm not sure what settings or extension block you'd have to use for 500nit max luminance instead of the 800nit used in that oled example either. I'd have to look into it more or ask around.

You're the winner here, mine came with Hynix PC711 x2, But gladly I got Samsung vram which it the only thing I can't replace easily. The 2R vs 1R is not that much, I have numerous sticks, usually 1R have better subtimming than 2R stick. Fury is the outlier but it's almost double the cost than normal 2R sticks.

Btw, there is even more cheaper wifi card you can find on ebay like Killer ax1650x which using exactly same Intel AX200 Wifi 6 chip but have additional Killer control center support.
Oh no, my bad I meant I got the Hynix PC711 2x 1TB as well. These days I don't really mind anymore as long as I dont get WD greens lol. My old GS65 actually had 512gb PM981 (970 evo oem) and I added a Samsung 970 EVO 1TB for gaming. My desktop has a 970 EVO Plus 2TB so with my current uses I don't feel anything drastic.

Yeah, swapping the ram is currently my lowest priority. The MediaTek had to go, ended up getting the AX210. My I put an AX200 on my previous laptop and worked nicely. Aside from that the system plays Elden Ring nicely at max settings no issues at all. Applause
