Chart says average for 2.5-3yo boy is 49cm. 2nd link shows XS helmets are good for 53-54cm (circumferences). I got an XS for my boy who's about to turn 4. DOT approved can be used for autocrossing, hopefully he'll join me one day for that (in a car)
EDIT: SCCA required SNELL rating (or ECE or FIA), so DOT only approved is not sufficient.. trying to see if I can cancel my order...
UPDATE: They cancelled my order. Nice people
DOT approval just means they think the helmet will probably be ok for DOT. They don't test the helmets.
As someone who's crashed motorcycles racing... a good helmet can save your life, even at low speeds.
Value yourself and the people around you better than a helmet like this.
That thinking is flawed. Do you realize cars can hit e-bikes just as hard as they hit motorcycles? You can't assume every two wheeled accident is a single vehicle wreck. Also, what is your head worth?
So, would you propose wearing an expensive full face motorcycle helmet on a regular bicycle? What about while crossing the road, since cars can hit pedestrians just as hard motorcycles too?
I don't know of any, but I would always recommend a full face helmet, so I haven't looked. From what understand, under the new ECE regulations, modular helmets must meet test standards both with the visor open and closed. If you can live with having your face shield down sometimes the Scorpion ADX2 might work.
Looks like LS2 has a 22.06 compliant modular helmet now as well. This one allows you to wear it like a 3/4 helmet by flipping the chin guard to the back. https://ls2helmets.com/ph/urban/valiant-x
I own the older model Valiant II and it's pretty awesome. Nice to be able to swap between full face and 3/4 on the fly. It's an ECE 22.05 though.
Do you know if older helmet models that are still on the market get tested for the new standards? Curious if the fact that it's ECE 22.05 means that it failed ECE 22.06 tests, or if it just hasn't been tested for ECE 22.06 standards.
people talking about cheap helmets...they're all held to regulations and standard, so if they pass a standard, it's fine. there's a lot of marketing and fluff in the helmet business and there's a lot of margin to make on ones with sleeker designs and premium materials. i wouldn't knock a brand just because they're not expensive.

It just hasn't been tested, probably. They don't say "we tested this helmet and it meets 22.05, but not 22.06". Going forward, if it doesn't meet the new standard, it's not for sale in the EU (with some grace period for the older helmets).
It's not as though the older helmets are garbage or anything. I presume that LS2 wants you to upgrade, so they just don't bother getting the older helmets tested. My understanding, though, is that a lot of helmets will need redesigns to meet the new rotational force standards.

The spandex warriors on the road are too cool for full face helmets. That doesn't go with their "kit". If I was one of them I probably would wear a full face helmet or I wouldn't bother at all.

Actually... Yeah. I mean if you're regularly riding an e-bike in traffic at 30mph. Check out "e-bike helmets" on YouTube and you'll see a ton of people wearing full face enduro helmets.
If you're just riding on bike paths or protected bike lanes then I think you'd be fine with something less, but where I'm from people are riding e-bikes, in traffic, sometimes at full speed downhill. I'd want a full face helmet in that case.

There's a reason half helmets are known at "pudding bowls".

There's a saying to the effect of, " a 20 dollar helmet for a 20 dollar head" lol. Definitely better than no helmet though
