The other thread has the one directly from lenovo for about $100 more. On that you get 32gb ram and 1tb ssd. This is still a good deal because you'll get it faster but for me the other deal is better for the price.

You also might prefer this one if you are going to swap the ram anyway to crucial or kingston like some people do for increased performance, using that $100 toward the ram.
I used the kit recommended in a few of the youtube vids that show you how to take the bottom of the chassis off and how everything is laid out inside. This ram is linked below. It is $140 currently, at least at amazon, but it was $130 when I bought it a few weeks ago.
The ssd would still be 1/4 the size though at 512gb. That is plenty for a boot/OS drive but still a loss compared to the other deal's 2TB boot drive. There is room to add a 2nd one at some point if you wanted to, but for more $ however which starts adding up price wise. I did a 2TB samsung 970evo as the secondary / file bank / gaming install drive

Not hot anymore... a few weeks back, lenovo direct had a L5P with 2 TB and 32 GB RAM for $1500. Being a gaming laptop you do need more of disk space and you will fill up 512 GB pretty easily with the OS included. I am typing now on a Legion 7 ... same config but with 16 GB and 1 TB for around 1400 from Jan deal. This has vapor chamber cooling and runs cooler... I have not heard yet the fans blasting off on this and is lighter. I heard this also has more metal inside compared L5P. So, you may want to watch out for. Regardless, these are great machines.

What would be the performance difference with a Legion y540 (non-pro) w/ a 9th gen Core i5 and RTX 2060 and 12gb ram? Not sure the wattage of the 2060 in mine.

I so don't need this but tempted lol
It depends on what you're primarily doing with it. You won't see a difference in browsing or using your office apps. But with gaming or crypto mining... it would be significant. RTX 2060 vs RTX 3070... just to give you an idea... upgrade an RTX 3060 to RTX 3070 ... Lenovo wants $240. Now yours is 2060... the difference will be significant in high end games.

Use it mostly for VR and kinda annoyed that most PC VR games I have need to be played on low (Asgards Wrath, Half Life Alyx etc). I think my rtx 2060 is only 80 or 90 watts (didn't know that was a limiter previously)
I bought mine at Microcenter a few weeks back for $1699. The difference being mines

Pretty solid little laptop. The only big problem with this deal I see is that you can't cant game on 512GB. The window install alone is like 150-200GB. You'll have to upgrade to there's no point in even buying this laptop. That still only puts you up $100. I think that still makes this a solid deal. This is generally considered the best laptop of this age and category
Its also worth noting a few online folks have called out that the ram on this laptop has poor timing. see Jarrod's tech. It doesn't bother me. My games run fine for now, but youll see any instance 10% speed boost with literally any other ram.
On a side note I had an unusual issue this morning with the fans running constantly. The fix was to install the latest geforce drivers. Something to keep in your pocket.
If it's Samsung memory then expect 60, otherwise 50-55.
Actually this is incorrect.
Samsung around 66 MH/s and Micron 59-60 MH/s. Also Samsung units run about 10 watts less on the GPU (128-130 watts vs 140 watts for Micron). Micron VRAM takes more voltage.
I have 3 and 2 of them died while mining, both that died were Micron VRAM variants. One of them lasted 3 months, the other 4 months. I cant say for sure but they probably died before the Samsung one because they took more power and ran at the wattage limit constantly.
Of course I sent them off for warranty and Lenovo fixed them (replaced motherboard, etc) so it was no issue but I would not recommend mining on these.

How will this 3070 compare to a desktop version 3070
It's 140w which is great for laptop performance. The comparable asus zephyrus and alienware m5 models are 85w - 125w and they throttle cpu if the cpu is allowed to do full boost clocks.
However it will never compare to desktop cards. It's probably like a 2060 or 2060ti or something but that is plenty for a 1600p screen. It even plays elden ring well at 4k on my hdmi 2.1 tv when I hook it up there.
If you really want or "must have" desktop performance I'd build a mini itx duffle-bag/backpack rig with a portable mini hdmi VRR/g-sync screen off of amazon. Plus it would be more upgradable later. I had considered it but the price/performance on these for ~ 1500 bux or so really can't be beat (plus the form factor obviously, even if using as a portable desktop with peripherals). Desktop components in mini itx + the case would be a lot more money overall.
I was talking about an actual mini itx case in a duffle/backpack but I saw this the other day so posting it for lolz:
