I paid over $100 for one of these several years ago when I needed a good soldering iron with accurate temperature control. Worth every penny. I'm almost tempted to buy it again to get a better deal on it.

Great soldering iron but 7% off the regular price doesn't seem like a slick deal to me.

I just checked eBay and see 2 different sellers have these in new condition for $87.99 with free shipping

Yeah I was wondering about the ones for sale at that price, since they weren't mentioned initially I was wondering if there was something wrong with the seller, although now noticing that the normal micro-center price is only 7 more I guess the ebay price isn't too far out of line.

At least at MC you'll get a genuine one. Amazon and eBay can be fakes for this unit.

The dumbest temp adjustment ever put on a soldering station.

I hate it every time I use it

Just be aware that there are knock offs of these floating around if you're buying from a random vendor on e-bay. they'll look very very similar, but the electronics and heating element will be different.

I have one of these. It's a game changer from the $15 15/30w garbage to this in every way.

I don't solder that much, but I wound up going with a Weller analog station for this reason. The Hakko otherwise seems like a slightly better unit.

If you aren't going to use it all the time, the temp adjust on this probably isn't that annoying.

You are right about watching out for fakes. I only mentioned eBay because the OP said they were $30 more on eBay.
If you did happen to buy one on eBay there are some good videos on YouTube that help you to spot a fake. If you did end up with a fake you can file for item Not As Described on eBay for a full refund.

Why this over one of the new "smart" ones?

If you want the absolute best soldering station get a Metcal. Even an old used SP200 setup from ebay will work better than anything new. They control the power output precisely even when heavily loaded by instantly ramping the power to the tip as needed, without affecting the temperature. The tip controls the temp by its metallic composition, so it's always exact. And the tips last forever, I still use one daily that is around 20 years old. You do have to buy different tips for different temps, but they actually maintain the temp during soldering so I can run a much cooler temp than with any other setup, and can do more with each tip. I just bought a big bundle of used tips off eBay that has lasted me forever.

I swear my soldering skills improved 10x when I got one of these. Heats up super fast and is top notch quality. The interface for changing temp is frustrating though.
