At least we got to post #14 in this thread before this same stupid and played out comment showed up, like it does in just about every hard drive thread, by someone who doesn't understand backing up the data that they care about.

You have a lot to learn. Read up on shucking drives, you do not lose the warranty.

Are these still worth shucking, or are they usually SMR drives these days? (although I'm a newbie to shucking, so may not have any clue what I'm talking about :-) )

I don't think WD has any smr drives over 8tb. I'm not sure anyone could tell you definitively what's in these but many think the 16tb models are hgst ultrastar hc530.

Pretty comparable, but 12TB = $15.83/TB vs 16TB = $15.94/TB, so 12TB is pennies cheaper.

I honestly don't see 12TB @.$170 anytime soon. Maybe BF if you can wait.

To me this seems to be putting a lot of eggs in one basket. Yes it's 16TB but if the drive fails then all of that data disappears.
I think people usually put these in some kind of RAID setup, e.g., in a NAS, so if a drive fails they don't lose any data and can plug and play a new drive to replace the old one in the system (with the NAS software many times abstracting away/taking care of all the details for that drive replacement).
