MLB.TV is great if you don't care about watching your local team.
Exactly - one reason baseball is a dying sport is because their ridiculous TV contracts and that they still blackout games - it would benefit their league if they let it have more exposure.
To minimize potentially excessively long thread mainly cuz of requesting for free code, I created in wiki a

NBA and NFL blackout local games too…. I think it's standard to protect the local affiliates/ad revenue.

The NFL stopped blacking out games back in 2014.

For Sunday Ticket online? I have it (including this last season). They are always blacked out for me. I think what you are referencing is the old policy that if a game wasn't sold out (85% of tickets sold), it would be blacked out on TV. That's totally different--that prevented anyone locally from even watching the game on cable. Obviously MLB doesn't have that policy -- Tampa Bay would be blacked out all season.

No, for local games. If they're blacked out in Sunday Ticket it's because it's airing on local TV.

Right. That's what MLB.tv does too. You could say that NFL is different because the games are on networks so you can get them via antenna, but you can't get them streaming. The real difference is that MLB has more regional sports network contracts. The blackout rules are the same though. But re the NFL, with new partnerships with Amazon, NFL Network, etc., the games are blacked out fully if you don't pay.

The MLB doesn't broadcast most of its games over the air, that's the biggest difference. If you're in a NFL team's local market, all of their games are available over the air, regardless of ticket sales. Even the Monday Night Football and TNF games have to be simulcast. That's what I mean. If you're trying to watch out of market games, obviously that's different - but that's not a blackout.

MLB should have done this as part of their collective bargaining... Nothing they did has me interested in coming back as a fan. I hate what they've done to Baseball.
