This motherboard predates DDR5 memory.
Next gen of AMD CPUs will have new socket, so, a AM4 socket board will probably carry very limited upgradability anyways.
Bought it from Newegg for 220+tax back in Aug 2020, first paired with a 3700x then a 5900x. Running all core 4.7G with no problem whatsoever. Great AM4 board. If you need one, go no further.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm looking to build and I'm pretty sure this is a good deal for what I'm looking to do, (From what I'm reading) only I'm not sure what my limitations would be to put in it, namely a graphics card and processor. I'm not looking for the latest and greatest so i can play everything on ultra settings for the next 7 years. Just something on a budget where I'll be able to play new games without issue.

You guys got any good advice or it a website where I can mix and match components for this MOBO? Maybe just a good recommendation for cpu/gpu combo. Thanks everyone.
This is a fantastic board but honestly, I would go with Intel 12th gen right now for a little "future proofing" to be ready for ddr5 and pcie5 upgrades down the road.

This platform is at the end of it's life, but it'll handle up to an R9 and frankly there's not really a limiting factor on GPUs with any motherboard. Crap quality vrms and power handling will cause throttling on low end motherboards, but otherwise this chipset works with all Ryzen CPUs. AMD is releasing a bunch of new models for this platform and I like the new 5600 non-X as a solid budget option (wouldn't have to pair with a motherboard this expensive though).

Regarding Intel 12th gen:
I just paired the MSI B660 Mag Mortar (or Tomahawk for $10 more) with an i5-12400 since I don't plan to overclock. It's going along with an rtx 3070 ti but it would be an appropriate CPU up for anything from a 3050 to a 3080 without bottlenecking the GPU at low resolutions (I recommend a 3060ti and up to stay relevant). That's my current recommendation for anyone building new and not upgrading.

On the AMD side of GPUs I wouldn't go below a 6600 XT.

Yes, I got this board for 220 a year or so ago but times were different then. I did a straightforward tomahawk x570 + 5600x + 32GB RAM + 3070. It made a pretty beastly build for the price range intended for 1440p. I was happy getting it for 220 at the time, and if I were doing a DDR4 build this would be worth 200.Some of the other MSI boards had some issues but the tomahawk line is strong.

Would much prefer it if this would support both DDR4 and DDR5 like some motherboards are, for future upgrades........
What motherboards support both? Only one I found was a crappy Onda H610 Intel board.

That's really informative and gives me a lot to think about. I'm going to start looking in the Intel direction and see what's what. Thanks for taking your time for a thorough response.

Intel is still a bit more expensive in terms of motherboard. This is a great motherboard for the price, and Ryzen is really good. Personally, if I were in your shoes, I'd either go R9 5900x, or the 12th Gen i7. I would not go i5, or 5600x/5800x for something long term. 3070ti is probably best bang/buck right now, or if you're lucky at best buy 3080ti's.

Your statements don't make any sense. Intel is more expensive yet you recommend a $450 5900X? Even a 12th gen i7 tops out at $350, and it's overkill for someone who doesn't need top of the line specs. Then you recommend at $1200+ GPU? Oh, but those slightly more expensive Intel motherboards are the problem..

Not sure how much of a good deal this is. It was $220 when it was first released. I don't know why the price ballooned up to nearly $270.

Ok.
GPU's are expensive. He wants something that lasts.

Ryzen CPU more expensive, motherboards less expensive.
Intel CPU Less expensive, motherboards more expensive.

Gpu, expensive.

edit: I also haven't looked at 5800x prices in a while, and it looks like they've dropped low enough to be worth it now.
and the 3070ti is like $800 right?

I got this board last year, paired it with a 5800X and 32GB of memory. Solid board, I did a lot of homework before purchasing this board. My last MSI board is also a tank (MSI Z270 MPOWER GAMING TITANIUM) allowing me to overclock the hell out of my Intel 6700K to 4.8Ghz 24/7 stable. The only reason I upgraded was that I needed more CPU processing power for video work. Sadly I didn't win the 6700K 5.0Ghz lottery.

Though I really wanted to wait and get a 5900X or a 5950X, my future upgrade will be Threadripper based.

Fantastic motherboard, hardware is top tier,BIOS updates frequently from MSI and the new RGB software is passable. If you're in the market for an AM4 motherboard this is the one.

OpenRGB supports MSI motherboards now. It's so nice to be finally rid MSI Dragon Center. I don't know how the same company that makes Afterburner makes such a dumpster fire, bloated program.

Great deal. If these boards were this price when I did my recent build, I'd probably have spent the extra $50 for this over the b550 tomahawk I ended up getting. I'm happy with the b550, though.

You don't need a top end 3080 ti to last when a mid-range GPU will be relevant for many, many years. Especially with how powerful the 30 series are. Price wise, yes, a non-FE 3070 ti would be around $750-$800 but I still would say a 3070 is a better bang for the buck (7% less performance) though price may not be much lower. You won't find the FE 3080 ti so you're likely to pay $1400+ for an AIB version - definitely an enthusiast level product.

The prices for good motherboards are going to be expensive no matter what the platform. Intel 11/10th gen b660/z590 motherboards are pretty even with Ryzen b550/x570. Since there are no equivalent AMD chipset to match the b660/z690 boards, there's no frame of reference. I still think paying an extra $20-$30 for an intel chipset that supports ddr-5 and pci-e 5 is worth it..

That's the first one that I've seen, but it is a feature that I hope more manufacturers will take up.
