Over the fireplace installation is a dream come true for TV manufacturers.

I have this, however it's slightly off kilter and it drives me insane. I tried tightening the bolts but they come loose slightly. But the up/down is very easy.

If your fireplace is decretive only, then this is fine. But if you actual use your fireplace for heating, it is a terrible idea to place your TV above the fireplace. The top enemies for electronics are moisture and heat.

Unless your fireplace is busted it shouldn't be passing heat from behind or anywhere near this close enough to cause damage. That's the entire point is to remove it out of the danger zone. That's why you should also have a mantle is to project the heat out not up. There's plenty of documentation on this. It's fine to mount your TV above a fireplace.

Absolutly worst place to put your TV is above your fireplace. Your TV should be eye level. Even with this thing it's still too high. Watching at this viewing angle will eventually give you a pain in the neck, and also for most TVs distort the picture. Of course if you don't know any better you probably won't ever figure out why your setup does not look as good as the guy who sets things up the right way.
You're right. I've been going about this all wrong! Instead of trying to improve my condition by getting closer to eye level with this, I should've been looking into getting a new house that doesn't have a fireplace in the only logical spot the tv would go.

Thanks!

Wish I had a fireplace for even just this reason alone. Smilie
No need for a fireplace. I purchased a MantelMount similar to this for my studio build. Mounted the TV right above my PC monitor and I'm able to swing it down right in front of the monitor for watching movies, then right back above it whilst gaming. Or... use both at once lol. It's a great investment for either scenario.

what 70" or smaller TV do you own that weighs more than 77lbs? Maybe only my old 65" plasma weighed too much for this mount.

Edit: Just checked out of curiosity and my old plasma was 88lbs

Seems a lot of people here speaking theoretically about things rather than practically.

In my former house, the only place a TV made sense was directly above the fireplace. In the 13 years we owned it, I had a 65" plasma up there for 10 years, and an 82" LED for 3. I only upgraded to the LED for better tech and a smart TV. The plasma was still working fine and in fact I even sold it.

As for the fireplace - used every winter, we would put 2-3 cord of wood through it. We had a wood stove insert, which is somewhat better for particulate but man I would often have that thing roaring so much you couldn't get within 5 or 6 feet of it, it was so hot. So hot the DOG wouldn't lay in front of it.

So yeah, theoretically above the fireplace is bad for a TV due to heat, but if my plasma (worse for heat than today's TV's) can survive there for a decade, so long as you mount it well (and it doesn't fall off the wall), I think the vast majority of people will be OK.

I wish they'd stop advertising TV sizes in mounts - for the most part all that matters is the weight itself. Yes, larger mounts (for bigger TV's) will have bigger brackets for larger VESA patterns, but using diagonal measurement is inaccurate.

The 65" plasma I mentioned in a previous post? Weighed MORE than the 82" LED! How times have changed.....

Does anyone know if this could be configured to pull up? My setup requires me to mount the TV at roughly 4 ft from the floor, and I would like to be able to pull the TV up to eye level.

Didn't read through all of the previous comments so missed yours sorry, just read the one quoting mine. Also at least with including sizes restrictions it takes some of the guess work out of it for most people, a 70" Led TV will be lighter than 77lbs I think they average in the 60s
