this is the plastic grinder, fyi. the metal one is the one you want
This is a little much for tomato sauce.

I have to make all sauce/paste fresh. My wife can't eat the canned stuff, we are guessing it's an allergy to the preservatives.

Anyway, best thing to do is get an immersion blender. The Mueller brands on Amazon are cheap and work great.
Up to you on if you want to blanch and remove skins or seeds. I cheat a lot and just blend the crap out of it.
Few hours on the stove for sauce, or in the oven for paste. Then I bag and freeze it for later.

Only complaint I have about making your own is that it is not cheap. Takes about 5 tomatoes to make a cup of sauce.
The real reason isn't really durability, I mean clearly it helps when it's made of metal. The real reason you want a metal ones is because you can chill it and keep the meat cold. The plastic one warm up and the plastic insulates it. So even an ice pack wrap doesn't do enough.

For small jobs, the plastic is fine, but I wouldn't do any major meat grinds in it, unless you want the meat to start cooking inside the grinder.

IMHO anything greater than a small amount of meat then this just becomes cumbersome.

Agree. I made the mistake of buying the plastic one and it was a nightmare. The metal one is fantastic.

This and a stand mixer are one of those things I'd LOVE to have but just don't have the counter space . As a result I have a bunch of smaller specialized tools that probably take more space in the closet than the mixer would Big Grin

I have the plastic one and can confirm, total garbage. Didn't know they made a metal one, glad to know it works well, going to go hunt that down.

I'm not an expert on the grinder world, all I know is that the Kitchenaid metal grinder does the job pretty well.

If you're just in the market for the grinder attachment, I'll echo what others have said and hold out for the metal version.

This past winter the metal attachment was on sale at Bed Bath & Beyond. It came out to $55-60 with their 20-25% off coupon.

So you're saying I can hold a bun in front of the grinder and have a perfectly done sausage plop onto it? KitchenAid, you've done it again.

I have the old version of the plastic grinder. I have used it 100 times over the last 15 years and it works just fine. I have not used this "new" version. I don't freeze anything and am not sure why one would? Bacteria does not live long on dry stainless and the reason to grind your own meat is to be able to trust cooking it rare/medium rare as the surface area of a sirloin roast or leg of lamb is many orders of magnitude less than the ground product. I would not grind and freeze personally, meat doesn't really like to be frozen.

I also have the old version of the food mill (vegetable strainer). I use it to make tomato sauce once a year and the reason you want to use it is because the best sauce is made by slow roasting the tomatoes first with onion, garlic, thyme, oregano, salt, pepper, and olive oil. This removes the skins and onion skins for a smooth sauce and then you only need to simmer the result with some dry white wine and can it.

I also have the older slicer shredder and am not really a fan. Hobart makes a much better one.

I have the plastic one and have used it for probably 50 times over the years, never came across anything like "grinder heating the meat" . It works fine, I run a file over the the cutting discs to keep them sharp. The plastic is really thick and heavy duty. The kitchenaid meat grinder comes no where close to a stand alone meat grinder, but as an occasional use device it works perfectly.

Oops forgot to add that the food slicer/ shredder is a pain to use. It's hard to clean up. Keeps getting clogged. I use a mandolin to slice veggies with less drama

I own the plastic one and and it works perfect. I'm not saying the metal isn't better, I'm sure it is. This one works perfectly fine though.
