Envy: Listed for $1000. $600 after discount.
Pavilion: Listed for $900. $650 after discount.

With both from HP, Envy is a better deal. Touchscreen is a must for kids.

I agree the individual you quoted gave bad advice. However a couple things to keep in mind, the Envy i5 I believe had Iris graphics, so both iGPUs are pretty much equally good (or bad depending on your take). Single core performance should be pretty much equal as well.

However, you are correct this Ryzen will crush it in heavy multithreaded workloads like handbrake encoding etc. as it does have twice as many cores. However I feel that isn't a huge benefit as I don't feel that's usually the target of an ultrabook laptop.

The CPU basically becomes irrelevant for the use case you described. Save your fifty bucks or look at things that start to matter, screen quality/brightness, battery life, which one she likes the look and feel of better. Smilie

The AMD's multicore performance is simply unmatched compared to the i5. But if your use case is as you described, there's really no need for AMD. Plus, the battery life just isn't as good as the evo i5.

I purchased this computer 3 weeks ago from the microcenter deal. I like it, my main complaint is that it is constantly dropping the wifi signal, it is very frustrating. Also, when you go to reconnect it does not pull up any wifi signal, you have to go through the troubleshooting to have it pick it back up. This is the 2nd HP laptop I have owned , both with the same issue. If someone knows of a solution I am all ears.

Wanted to give this to college student who is into programming. Would Ryzen 7 is a better option or I should look out for i7 11 gen one. Anything else to look out for. Thanks

unfortunately I've had nothing but bad experiences one after another from HP.. if it's not the screen.. it's the touch pad.. freezing etc. my go to has now been Lenovo for studying and work. can't rely on HP anymore but I know I'm one out of a zillion... so whatever it's worth. looks like a great deal though specification wise.

Yes, I value the 16:10 factor more than battery life since I usually buy spare power supplies if in the house.

Kids take some online classes and touchscreen is a must for taking quizzes.
A tablet for that purpose is not versatile enough.
Build quality is definitely better. Will see how it turns out over long run.

Bought Dell Inspiron 7000 in 2016 and hinges gave up in 2.5 years with very light use. Not trying to skimp again on the build. 🤷 ♂️

You can try manually setting up your WiFi connection, meaning manually put in the IP address - IPv4 and IPv6, gateway, and the DNS servers. In many cases, that will fix a wonky WiFi card connection.

All of the settings should be accessible on your router or Mesh network, if you are using one.

I recommend using Cloudflare DNS for the DNS servers regardless of why is on the router. The IPv4 addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and IPv6 is:

2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001

In my experience, manually putting in these settings will fix the WiFi connection from dropping.

Ryzen 7 has better performance than the 11th gen Core i7s. The 12th gen ones are better than the 11th gen, but I would stick with AMD for this cycle of CPUs.

I recently bought my wife a Dell with the Ryzen 7 5800U and it's quite impressive how fast her laptop is.

I'm looking to upgrade my laptop, which is a backup machine for my business. I'm only looking at Ryzen 7 laptops. This HP looks solid for the $, plus I love COSTCO.

Ryzen 6000 mobile apu's are supposed to double gfx performance with navi 2.
