I ended up using my Roku a lot because the Plex app works really well on it and is completely free (no Plex subscription/purchase required).

This is a great deal. Thanks for sharing. My kids love the Roku, easier for them to use when compared to the Amazon Fire. I ended up giving away my Fire streaming stick since the ADs and interface was frustrating to use.

Why hasn't Roku come up with a better version yet, their most deluxe model is only $79? It can do 1080p fine on Plex, but it's impossible to transcode 4k even with the "ultra" model.

You need a PLEX server (or NVidia Shield Pro) that can transcode. Things like Roku, Google TV, and Fire TV may not be powerful enough to transcode some 4k videos.

Yes I'm aware, that was kinda my point, Roku should release a better model capable of transcoding 4k.

But I think that's kind of a niche market. The vast, vast, vast majority of people don't have a need for this so I don't blame them for staying out of it.

Has there been reports of the remotes still draining the batteries? I bought a recent Roku Express 4K+ and I have to remove the batteries after each time I use them, lest they drain prematurely.

I've got some Apple TVs and Fire Sticks now- is there anything worthwhile that Roku does much better or exclusively that should make me consider snagging this? Thanks in advance!

If you don't need Dolby Vision/Atmos and just need a cheap streaming device, the $20 Onn 4k streaming box is highly recommended.

Not sure what is meant by "transcode" here. My Roku plays 4k videos just fine on "direct stream". Is the desire to downscale to 1080p or something? Is that why transcoding is needed?

Like many folks who are held hostage by Comcast being the only ISP provider in their neighborhood and have to get Xfinity, Roku has the Xfinity Stream app, which we would rather use instead of renting multiple Xfinity boxes. I think there are other streaming devices that also have the Xfinity Stream app but the Roku UI is simple to use and has minimal ads. Once the Xfinity Stream app is released on Apple TV, I will likely migrate one of my TVs to that. For now, Roku is the way to go if you have no choice but to get Xfinity.

Received mine today. There were 2 different boxes, each containing separate Roku, unlike the in-store 2in1 package. It's a good thing if you want to gift or sell the unwanted one.
