It seems you maybe ill-informed but to detail a car if you're applying a polish, you use a random orbital sander/polisher to do so

Good price on this model but easily worth the extra to get adjustable speed.

If you read/listen to professional reviewers, they recommend this over many of the variable speed sanders. Honestly, most "wood workers" that know what they are doing with respect to the variable speed will spend $100 more on one of these. This is hands down the best in this price range among peers.

for woodworking, the vast majority of the time the speed settings will never be used.

I've used mine to sand down bondo and polish headlights. I have variable speed though and it was helpful to turn it down a bit for those jobs. You don't have to but it makes it easier to handle as the top speed (which is what I assume this fixed one runs at) can get a little aggressive on delicate materials.

I use my variable speed settings all the time. If you are sanding between coats of paint, slowing the speed gives you more control before burning through the paint. At top speed this can happen extremely quickly, even with fine grits (220+)

Exactly. Highly speed for rough sanding. Lower speed for fine/finish sanding. I'm always changing the speed.

From experience variable speed is essential for almost all tasks. This model is okay if you your use case can do with one speed (highest). Kind oh how folks have multiple 4" angle grinders with different wheels permanently fixed to them.

Will this work to sand down rough connections on deck floor? Or better use belt sander?
