I have both. Can't imagine my wife or kids sitting through learning the Shield. They don't care. They just want to watch TV.
Yes! And this is why I finally converted to apple stuff. I need simple so the family can use and I don't want to be IT support

I have owned Apple TV in the past (2nd gen non 4K I think), but it didn't have all the channels that I needed, so switched over to Roku. Have they fixed the lack of available apps? Also, what makes the Apple TV better than the other devices that are much less expensive?

Edit: use the following:

AppleTV service
YouTube TV
Hulu
Peacock
HBO Max
Plex
Tubi
Prime Video

Also cast from iPad, iPhone, Android phone. Any issue with any of the apps or casting in its current version?

If you use Plex server and have variety of movie formats, Shield will play natively without a hitch whereas AppleTV is very picky. Also Shield can host Plex Server. I do have both and I use Shield in my basement movie room while AppleTV stays in the living room.
I have a Shield but hardly use it any more. Was using it for Kodi but dropped that platform for Plex.

I was considering running plex server on the Shield about a year ago, saw a lot of posts about it being very glitchy and hard to configure so dropped that idea. Has anything changed in that regard?

Also, been running Plex client on AppleTV 4K (1st Gen) - no issues whatsoever

Better than the shield to you?
i have both Apple TV and 2019 Shield TV and fire stick

i honestly thought the Apple TV wasn't worth the price, owning it for first week I been considering returning it, after awhile I got super used to it and can't go back to anything else...

then few months later Nvidia shield TV pop up on slickdeals i just wanted to try it, felt like its something i can stream my PC games to my bedroom, my god, the UI is ugly, its laggy sometime, youtube always buffer for no reason, wifi drop maybe 2-3 times a week (apple TV never have issue) the only reason why i kept the shield TV is its backlit remote which i like

tbh, i would prefer a $25 fireTV stick over shield TV

long story short, this Apple TV is epic deal, in for 2 more for my parents house

Does this let you watch local channels with an antenna?

I seriously doubt it. They usually go many years between updates.

Not to pile on, but the Shield TV (pro or not) are absolutely glacial in navigation. Like, prepare to wait 15 seconds sometimes with HBO max for it to switch tabs. Nightmare fuel and I sold both a regular and pro shield.

Unfortunately, the fatal flaw of the AppleTV 4K is it's lack of audio support for local movie rips. Doesn't work nice with bitstream. If you don't have a big local library it's an incredible device and far and away the best streamer out there.

I use a Roku Ultra which I'm just okay with, but it's the only way I can watch Dolby Atmos blu ray rips. Maybe Apple will update the OS to support it, but it's been an issue for many years.

Agreed with sometimes for HBO max. But other apps, not so. Voice is slow too.

Pros app wise for me have been, Google Duo, HD Homerun so I can watch local antenna TV, plex server so I can watch that antenna away from home, YT alternatives that let you skip commercials.

But the best thing has been the AI enhancement to upscale. I like it better than my LG CXs

Is it really that much better than a Fire TV 4K? I do have iphones & Macbook so guessing the Apple TV would probably support screen mirroring or casting. Any other advantages that would justify replacing the Fire TV with the Apple TV device?

I use my series x for everything streaming but this is very tempting to me simply so I can access iTunes extras in my movie library. I can't seem to decide one way or another.

https://airflow.app/

Anyone use AirFlow on these? I use it for my Chromecast Ultra but looks like it has Apple TV support too. Has the best subtitle support for local files IMO

i mean seeing that you already owned iphone and macbook, kinda like people asking you why would you prefer iphone over android, there are just something apple can do well we can't really explain, same thing for Apple TV, Apple did nailed it making a streaming device that work solid and the picture/sound quality are superb,

especially with Apple ecosystem (yes we fell for their marketing trap) everything just work together extremely seamless, as soon as you want to type something in search bar, your iphone will pop up a notification if you want to type something instead of voice/click wheel typing, it support up to 2 airpod at once. screen mirroring is "ok" kinda laggy for me, i really hope one day they will let you play ipad/iphone games with a bluetooth controller honestly that would complete my setup once and for all
