Buy them the cheapest controller in their favorite color until they are old enough to use the more expensive ones. My son was so thrilled that he had his very own red controller.

Same price at Target. Supposedly has a 2 year warranty, not bad for a "player 2" controller. Works on Windows and Xbox One as well, obviously.

Even so, you won't get buyer's remorse as much as an Elite 2 or some other top-tier controller that are designed for "professionals".

Also if you're into soldering I see this as a win. Once the controller breaks down, take out the PCB and use it as the brains for an arcade stick.
