On the website it still says "No. of players: Online (1-16)".
If you find something else please tell us. I have zero experience with this game but am interested to buy it for my kids.

I believe there is a single player aspect to the game, but it is mostly an online game. I know there are about 10+ characters to play as on each side (Zombie and Plants) with even more outfits to earn. It'll give the kids a lot to do and keep them busy for a while. I know my kids liked the openness of the game where they could just wander around, which is a great time killer. For the price, its worth it.
$10 is worth it, that is assuming they dont shut the servers down soon.

Also what's the current user base look like for multiplayer? Still a large community?

I was skeptical at first when I bought it for my PS5. My kids are 7 & 11. Definitely kid friendly. It's the funniest shooting game for kids. The plants shoot plant substance such as corn.
I ended up buying it for my 7 year old daughters switch so she could take it with her. It's tough finding kid friendly games. This one fits the bill.
Fun for adults too!!

This only mentions support which in turn means patches or updates. Oddly enough, the port to the switch came out after this announcement.
This however does not mention anything about the online servers for multiplayer support on whether or not they'll be shutting them down.
