Good news and bad news!

GOOD NEWS:

Cocoa nibs are crunchy and delicious in a lot of things IMHO, from yogurt to ice cream to baked goods, etc.
Navitas brand cocoa nibs have lower levels of dangerous metal contamination compared to other brands' cocoa nibs.

BAD NEWS:

Via ConsumerLab [consumerlab.com], emphasis mine: "Unfortunately, all three brands of nibs (bits of broken, roasted cocoa bean) tested by were Not Approved due to cadmium contamination. However, the best option among them is Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs because it had the highest concentration of flavanols — a whopping 677.1 mg per 3 tablespoons (30 grams), which was even more than its listed amount of 480 mg, and the lowest concentration of cadmium. Although the suggested 3 tablespoon serving size would put you at more than double the daily adult limit for cadmium, if you wanted just 200 mg of flavanols, you could eat a little less than one tablespoon per day and stay below the daily cadmium limit.

A few notes about ConsumerLab [consumerlab.com]

No affiliation with Consumer Reports
It's an incredibly awesome non-profit, non-governmental org that gets its funding ONLY from subscribers... not a penny from corporations or governments or advertisers, etc.

I have no affiliation 'cept as a long-time paying member.
This resource -- which provides incredibly useful, peer-reviewed, actual-tested info on 'supplements'... everything from apple cider vinegar to vitamin d to fish oil and olive oil and beyond... -- is so very, very worth the $54 bucks a year!!!

It's also labeled as superfood (whatever that means), non-GMO (despite there being no GMO cocoa crops), dairy-free, kosher, vegan, and plant-based. I mean, I could see how some people might find this useful, but really, stinks of marketing douchebaggery. Especially if it's devoid of actually useful info, such as description of what cacao nibs are (crushed beans) and that it is NOT chocolate.

This crap needs to stop. By definition Cacao Nibs are gluten free, there is no reason that companies need to advertise this and imply the others aren't gluten free. I swear I thought the worst was when I saw a package of bacon say it was gluten free at the store...

be advised these don't melt or dilute.
it's sort of like grinding up vanilla bean stalks
and adding that to your recipe,
instead of extract suspended in alcohol.

My wife noticed this while pregnant 2 years ago and having this daily - unlike the typical Prop65 warnings that are on everything under the sun, this one might actually have substance behind it, as cacao nibs can actually contain Cadmium. This led to some Very Intense medical consultations where flustered doctors had no idea what levels to clear as safe but said everything would probably be fine (it was). But they still recommended to better be safe and stay away from this while pregnant.

Same exact organic nibs? $8 each is still good shipped to the door.

How is this different from unsweetened bakers chocolate besides the fact that it's not formed into a bar? I get tossing it on food for flavor but eating it right out of the bag like they suggest sounds terrible.
