I bought a larger battery for my D4 from amazon for around $45 after using it heavily for 2 years.

Of all the negatives one could have with a robot vacuum, two years of battery life isn't one of them. That's a pretty great amount of utility out of a battery. And they're not that expensive to replace.

This is a great deal. But, with the new generation of robot vacuums beginning to have the auto-empty feature, it's tough to go with one of these without that feature.

Yep, I got a neato d5 and it randomly stopped working after 2 years of light use. Had a completely useless error message that was impossible to debug. Got stuck all the time too. Never getting a neato again with the other better brands out there. Currently loving my roborock s4 max of 6 months, hopefully it holds up over time.
I got the dreaded "Reboot Me" error right at 2 years of light use. It will not clear even after following multiple attempts at troubleshooting. The robot is basically a brick. I would not buy another Neato.

The D8 is not an upgrade from the d4 d6 and d7 line. You need a whole new app, the navigation spins on itself so it struggles to find the no go zones which on the new app require perfect rectangles, so no more angles no go lines. I would avoid a D8 if you had previous Neato robots. Plus the D8 battery life is super short and the batteries are not plug and play with previous gen. The brushes and filters seem plug and play though.
Agree with this! Our D7 died, purchased the D9 and it's somehow worse, especially with the new app. Has to do 2 runs for the same floor the D7 could do in 1. Loved my neato but will go to a different brand when this one dies.

For those in the market, you can buy the Neato D9 directly from Neato Robotics for $450 and add 2 year accident protection for .99 cents.

https://neatorobotics.com/product...bot-vacuum

As to camera vs LiDAR on bot vacuums, do your research. Lot of privacy issues with camera and camera won't run in the dark? This isn't motel 6 and I'm not leaving a light on for the bot vacuum. LiDAR can run in the dark.

I just got the Shark IQ bot vac with auto empty and it misses spots, vacuums random spots and can only vacuum mapped rooms with the lights on. I ordered the Neato D9 and still waiting on it. Admittedly the auto empty feature is nice, but the Neato has better suction and LiDAR.

For those interested, the only differences between the D8, D9, and D10 is battery and suction. D8 is for small homes, D9 medium, and D 10 large. The D 10 offers a max mode which delivers the higher suction from the D9.

For those whose d4 thru d7 brushroll stopped working, I found the motor gear rounded from carpets/rugs and replacing that has revived my 3 vacuums from the dead. Just hoping this helps someone else so they don't try to buy a D8.

I have been using D7 for 3 years now, and it still works okay. It is just that I have to remap my apartment every month or so because it fails to load the map for some reason.

I've had a D3 Connected for multiple years, I would not buy another Neato (and probably not another robot vac). It constantly has problems navigating, it is unable to update via the app and it's a known issue for almost a year now [reddit.com]. I called customer support and there is still no fix, and at least my vacuum (the D3 Connected) can't be updated manually - maybe this D8 can.

I've wasted more time and repeatedly become frustrated trying to get the "robot vacuum that automatically cleans your floors for you periodically" dream than it would have taken me to just use a manual vacuum.
Roborock S4 Max throws every other budget robot out of the water. Waiting for vaccum self wash mop version. Meanwhile neato hasn't accomplished auto emptying bin.

I currently have a Neato D7. Is the Neato D9 an equivalent to it? I want to be able to tell the vacuum which rooms to clean.
I have a D7 (since July 2020). You can tell it which room to clean. You can't pick multiple zones but you can segment out rooms in the map and pick just a bedroom or just the kitchen.

Interesting comments here in general. I've had no problems with our D7 other than one time when it had to relearn the map. It even goes back and charges up more if it can't get the whole floor in one charge. Our floors are 80% hardwood and 20% carpet so don't know if that's helping extend it's life but it's been great for almost 2 years now and we run it 3x a week. Only maintenance has been replacing the rollers and filters every 6 months.

See, I had a D3 and that one worked, but my D4 currently sitting unplugged is the absolute worst robovac Ive ever had. Thing navigates about as well as a drunk tourist ,constantly gets itself stuck by the lidar sensor under things and forgets its map every other vaccum. Almost impossible to sell these used for enough to even recoup the cost of shipping, so stuck with this thing until I find the courage to wade into FB marketplace.

Stay far, far away from Neato, they've gone to absolute shit since the OG botvacs.

I've been using a Botvac D80 for over 5 years upstairs -bedrooms and bathrooms - and a Roborock S5 for well over a year downstairs (kitchen, living room /dining, bathrooms, laundry, office) .

Can't speak for the newer company models. Here's my take:

My Botvac is 'dumb'. It will get stuck about once every 15 times cleaning 800 square feet. I run it 4-5 times a week. It uses laser but it's old tech so it's slow but methodical and does a good job on medium pile carpet and tile. No map memory. Thresholds are no issue for this Botvac. It's a tank and doesn't want to wear out. I'm on my third battery. Got them all through Amazon. Paid 21.00 for the first one and only 12.00 for the one in there now (like new condition). Been going strong for three months now. Changed the beater bar buying from Ali Express for 8.00. So not expensive to maintain. I'm having to clean it every third time it runs. Don't have a desire for 'self emptying' unless it was free and the container bags were free. And even then…. I think I prefer throwing out the dust/dirt weekly.

My Roborock is amazing compared to the Botvac. Perfect navigation on carpet and hardwood. Handles 1200 square feet 4-5 times a week and I have to empty the bin once a week. Still on the first battery.

Both clean well but have trouble with fine pet hair and you need to run a real vac every couple of weeks. The Botvac picks up fine pet hair slightly better. Between the two of them I would not hesitate to try an updated Botvac. ESP if the navigation was comparable to Roborock and I could return it if I didn't like it after trying it out 10-12 times

Same here. Any slight movement from base renders the map invalid and have to rerun the mapping process. Also if you have kept some object near the bot after mapping, it shows error that floor plan not found. It is very annoying to redo floor mapping every other week

Question for the neato experts: I have a D3 and just replaced the battery after 2+ years. When I look on the app, it says something like 450 charge cycles, which I assume is from the original battery. Is there any way to reset that in the app so it starts at 0 for a new battery?

My old neato had a 'new battery's setting but this doesn't seem to have one.
