I have been a BJ's member for many years and a Costco member for about 6 months. they are around 5 miles apart. Gas prices are pretty much within a penny of each other.
Not sure about Costco but BJ's gas opens at 6AM near me so I go on the way to work when there's no one there and I am in and out.
If you have the BJ's CC you get $0.10/gal off of gas. They also have promos on certain items from time to time -"Octane" items that give you $0.10/gal off at your next fill up.
Other comments on the 2;
I like costco for general variety and their take and bake selection which is nice. Costco is often higher-priced for comparable items and sometimes costco only has "organic" or "free range" options which I DGAF about but have to pay more for since that's the only think Costco sells. costco has a better clothing selection IMHO. costco also has a food court which I grab pizza from time to time; I don't think ANY BJ's does any more.
some of my opinions on costco relate more to "grass is greener" as I have been a BJ's member for probably 10+ years.
BJ's accepts manufacturer Q's as well as their own. They OFTEN have overlapping coupon promos and you can get some things for great discounts this way. BJ's shows accurate in-store pricing on their website and app and costco most certainly does not. BJ's has buy online/instore and curbside pickup. I don't believe Costco does. BJ's also has express pay which is where you use your phone to scan items, pay and walk out. No waiting in line for registers.
Oh yeah and one super annoying thing Costco does is constantly move stuff. It's their strategy to make you wander around and buy more but it's super frustrating when you walk in to get something you saw a few days prior and you have to walk all over the place to find it.
Costco max rebate is 4% if you have their CC, BJ's is 5%.
I go to both - Costco for items only sold there and BJ's for more common weekly grocery stuff.

Besides if it does not work you can request a refund.
I have both costco and bjs. I find myself at bjs way more often now. Here is why:
Its about 2 miles from costco.
I can barely find a parking spot at costco. There are usually about 50 cars and anywhere from 40 to 200 people in bjs. Try a 1000 at the costco here.
Good luck getting gas within a timely matter now that gas prices are high and bjs and costco gas is about 20 cents cheaper than everyone else around here.
Id say bjs meat, fruit and veggies are not as good, but they do come in smaller quantities than costco.
The frozen section seems to be about the same quality and price.
I do like that they have smaller options on lots of things.
Negatives:
Its not as nice.
Check out seems to take longer even though there is no one in there. (Mostly self check out)
You have to download the app and manually clip coupons. (Like the old costco way)
Ill be renewing mine when its times.
(anecdotal side note on gas), last time gas prices went up, BJ's was first with the increase, other places took days.

Also you're forgetting Costco's (almost) unlimited return policy, something BJ's can't touch, however this membership deal is about 1/3 the price, so do whatever works best for you and your wallet.
Personally, I find myself going to Costco far more than BJ's.

You're going to Costco at the wrong times if you've having issues finding parking or getting gas. First thing in the morning or shortly before they close is when I try to go.

The thing is, I have been to costco at all times and then one by me is never below 65 capacity. The one 30 min away, that i have to go to get kirkland booze, seems to be at 90% or above every time I have been there. Alpharetta, GA.
I guess its another plus for bjs that I dont have to plan my day around picking up a few items.
Someone in one of these threads posted it's Top Tier but I don't know that for a fact.

If you are doing a big purchase with lots of items, it may be easier to just go through self checkout. I have been at BJs on a Saturday where there are 20 to 30 people in line to use the registers. This new app worked great in avoiding those lines.

There is a limit to what you can purchase this way - I think it's like $700 off the top of my head but that might be wrong.
I was told on the way out they have to scan 7 random items to make sure you aren't stealing anything. That number might scale with the order though. I usually take care to position items with UPC up to facilitate leaving.
That said it's an excellent service that saves a lot of time.

I'm not sure either one is "grass is greener" - I think it depends on your shopping habits and your needs, and if you even have a BJ's/Costco/Sam's all in your area or not.
More food for thought if you're a credit card holder of either club: if you get the BJ's credit card, you get 10c back on gas, but the Costco credit card gives you 4% back on gas, the higher gas goes the more you get back from that 4%. Right now, you'd be getting (roughly) 17c/gal back at Costco in my area vs 10c/gal at BJ's.

All good points, can confirm BJ's does not have a food court and their .com is more in-tune with what they have in-club vs. Costco, however it's not perfect. I've found things in-club that weren't on the website, and vice-versa.

We don't generally shop at conventional supermarkets/grocers - BJ's and Costco (and Aldi, job lot stores) are where we shop. So, 5% back on groceries for me.
And by "grass is greener" I meant I've been shopping at BJ's so many years that Costco is refreshing - doesn't mean if I'm a member there for another year that the same stuff will be appealing as it's only new once.
