If you don't have ethernet backhaul, better off spending 40 extra bucks for M9 Plus:

I've set up oodles of S4 units. They are very nice though require a smartphone if you are helping elderly who don't have one.

Get the App. Have the first one plugged into your Internet Ethernet cable (this is a router, you don't need a router in front of it), it acts like a router, you now go to the app and walk through the sign in steps, it finds the first router, has you setup the wifi name (ssid) and password, it saves it, reboots, asks if you want to setup more, same process minus the name of the wifi part, as long as they are in range of each other they create a nice mesh network. I've setup in a row before too and they work well. You can even mix and match Deco models on the same network.

So what does setup for these look like...? Besides maybe plugging in one unit to the router?

Something to note, you HAVE to update the firmware on all these to the latest version. And you have to make sure you update to the correct firmware based on the hardware version. Otherwise the WPA setting isn't secure enough. I have a M5 set that basically stopped working in 2020 due to this WPA thing. TP Link took a bit to remedy so I stopped using it; but just tested it again. Updating the firmware worked and was able to get 400+mb nearby the main unit on a 400mb down plan. So not bad. Only got around 80mb near the 2nd unit though. For the price though if you aren't expecting record setting speeds and need to cover a lot of square footage, you could do a lot worse for under $100

Solid mesh system, have it going it 2 of our homes. Setup was straightforward and has been running stable for 2+ years.

I'm looking for a wired connection with an Ethernet cable instead of buying a 100 ft cable. This works?

As you have them, maybe you can help me.
It doesn't look like these support poe?
Does each of them separately needs source of power?

Are these like the eero units in that they are vastly less configurable than a normal router?

Yes, they all need their own power source (they come with a regular wall wart.)

I have been running the M5 version in a 1400 sq foot home. Two stories plus basement on a 1/3 acre lot. It took maybe 10 min per device to fully setup. I use Verizon FIOS 200/200. I regularly get 300/300 plus from the devices, can stream from my who property, and my kid does gaming and streaming without issues. I do have two of the devices hard wired for backhaul connected that covers the basement and first floor. One device is on the second floor and the gaming machine is hard wired to the device. Been using them for years and have zero issues.

Which of these 2 is the better deal? Watching some YT videos, the edge goes to S4, no?

I got the m9 refurbs from them and I keep getting my August door lock dropped and reconnected. Just a heads up you can't pick channels with these TP-Link mesh routers.
