Excellent price on these, it may be an all-time low. The 660s are a somewhat controversial model -- if you are considering buying, be sure to research them vs the 600 and 650/6xx. Some people love the 660s, others think they are a step back from the 600.

The are not high impedance headphones. You don't need to spend hundreds on an amp to get a decent one, but the headphone outs on most AV receivers are not good, because the output impedance is usually too high to use on medium or low-impedance headphones. You always want a damping ratio of 8-10+:1 for headphone impedance:output impedance, or else the frequency response of the headphone will be dramatically impacted. If you can find an AV receiver with a listed output impedance and it's in the proper range then go for it, but if that spec isn't listed, do not trust it.

I have the HD 599 is this a big upgrade? Also what's the difference between HD 600 650 and this? Also are they good for metal?

Ah, you are comparing it to the stack. I am not sure a dedicated DAC is necessary these days unless you want to convert bluetooth which is why I would recommend just getting a quality amp to start with.
