Been riding decades, rode 2k to 8k bikes, these offer huge value. Rode both, bought XC, one of the best sub-$5k Downcountry bikes. Frame and geometry are superb, components are fair as measured against a $6k version of same bike. The Trail is cool and capable 150/140mm that rides super plush but you pay for all that in reduced climbing efficiency and is more bike than 99% of riders need. I was 30% faster and 30% less spent after an hour on XC vs Trail. Just rode the XC in AZ McDowel mountains, super sketchy, hundreds of 1' drops, bike ate it up. The Trail is an Intense Primer, XC is Sniper Trail with symmetrical rear triangle. Here's a Sniper T guessing $7k build same frame, same geometry, same 120/120mm. https://youtu.be/qCwhm0mbviA

Feel free to read the other threads where 100 other people made the same comment. This isn't a bike a casual ride along the beach...these are serious mountain bikes capable of being ridden aggressively on trails. They compare favorably to bikes that cost $4500-6000--carbon fiber frames, Fox suspension, decent grade parts.

If you want a bike that should be able to fly, go look at Yeti, Santa Cruz, or Pivot bikes...their cheapest models cost more than this and their bikes can get into the 5 figures
https://www.backcountry.com/santa...ntain-bike
(Notice that even that extremely expensive thing is almost completely sold out--only 1 medium left in stock).

For example, the Santa Cruz Hightower Carbon R build is pretty similar to the Intense 951 Trail in termps of parts and intended use. The Hightower Carbon frame alone sells for $3699, and the R build costs $5k (and is low stock/sold out most places).

For 5k, you get the same drivetrain, similar mediocre wheels (with an old-style hyperglide cassette), arguably worse brakes, similar-level suspension...but you do get a prettier paint job and the Santa Cruz name.

But Intense is not some no-name chinese company. They are a real CA based bike company and are standing behind the 951 brand and offering a 5 year warranty.
Plus you've got the added bonus of the Costco return policy. If you have a problem with the bike and Intense won't help you out to your satisfaction, costco will take it back any time.

I picked up the XC in February from Costco when it was at $3250. I test rode it locally along with a Sniper and the Primer. I also rode several friends mid- to high-end bikes. The 951 XC definitely holds up and is a great value.

In addition to local trail riding, I just got back from a 4 day bike packing trip with some pretty serious climbing, loaded up, on gravel and dirt roads. The XC did an excellent job. I had set it up tubeless and the only issue I had over the trip was 1 dropped chain during a downshift. I still don't know what caused it. Literally hundreds of 3-4 cog downshifts on this trip otherwise without issue.

It was a great climber plus no brake issues on the descents. My friend, with brand new vented brake pads and weighing 20lbs less had some stinky and noisy brakes on his (Giant) bike on some of the same descents.

For $3250, it was a great deal. For $3500, still a great value. My one complaint is that mine is a 2021 model, which was odd considering the purchase date.

Check out the Nukeproof Scout on Chainreactioncycles.com. You can get a pretty nicely specced one for well under $3k, then add your own upgrades if you want. I did that, and I really like my bike.
Wow great advice, thank you. I honestly didn't know you could purchase from them in America. Interesting way to get some of those British hard tails over here.

An NX level gruppo is OK, but I wish they'd gone up to GX--although that would raise the price a few hundred more. That said, these Intense bikes are very nice. If I didn't already buy my YT, I'd be picking one of these up.

Yeah. Shipping tacks on an additional $200 or so, but even so, Nukeproof and Ragley (and even Vitus) have some solid hardtail offerings that have modern geometry and are easily upgradable. My Nukeproof Scout barely resembles the bike I bought. I have swapped out wheels, brakes, drivetrain, fork, seatpost,... pretty much everything over the months I've had it. Super fun to do (although expensive).

Poor resale on these. No name bikes take a big hit on resale. Right off I see house brand bar, stem, mediocre brakes, in house hubs, and run of the mill wheels. Way over priced IMO. The thing about carbon frames is they are easily damaged and if hit hard, they don't bend or dent, they snap break. Not a bike I would run down Mr. Toads in our Sierra's.
Intense is hardly "no name" to people who actually know about mountain bikes.

I think resale is tough on higher end niche bikes. Specialized, giant, trek hold their value longer over time. Someone looking for intense, pivot, Titus, canyon, ibis, etc is probably not interested in a 10 year old used high end bike. They are already in the niche market and will pay top dollar for new bike.

FYI sold my 2009 specialized Stumpjumper FSR for $1500. Paid $1800. Neighbor has a 2010 Titus fs similar spec to my stumpy if not better. No one will touch it for $1000.

Purchased this intense trail the first time it went live on Costco. Don't believe I will recover anywhere close to what I did on my stumpy.

Been riding DH and real trails here in N Cal for 30 years and ride with two groups, attend mtb festivals and races and have never seen a Intense bike. Thus the "no name". They sponsor no riders. They are buying likely cheapo frames (notice they don't mention who is the frame mfg), in house parts, and trying to convince Costco shoppers this is the shitz. Nope, real riders don't buy a high end bike from Costco.

I don't believe you. It's impossible for anyone to navigate that bikesdirect website, let alone purchase anything through it.
Hmm..I found it much much easier ordering off bikesdirect than the clunky Costco site

This is an awesome bike for the money, if you look at 99Spokes, the XC bike is one of the top value for money bikes in this price range.

Really wish I didn't get a Polygon about a month ago because I would have splurged the extra grand for this easily. Great components overall and the weight is that of a modern hardtail which is unbelievable at this price point

Legit bike. Bought the Trail in June. Handles San Diego blues and blacks well. Went tubeless recently and it feels good. SkyPark in SoCal rents these as their main bike, so that speaks to their confidence in it. Solid mid-grade components.

Tiny gripes: wanted a bigger front disc, dropper doesn't seems as buttery smooth as my aftermarket PNW, bottom bracket guard isn't attached with great adhesive, tires are okay but could be wider. Minor stuff.

One final anecdote, but I'm not sure I blame Intense: on a recent climb, I shifted straight through about 3 gears to my climbing gear and it hopped the cassette and the derailleur went into the spokes. Seems like an adjustment issue, and the derailleur is SRAM (so obviously not Intense's product) so I figured I should have checked the adjustment more frequently. It had been shifting fine previously for several months. Slightly bent the derailleur hanger Frown. I sent a note to intense and they even set me up with a local repair shop to fix the derailleur hanger at no charge.
*Not a fan of Intense…I had a similar situation with my derailleur, only mine was less than 5 minutes after set up and intense refused to fix….

I bought two of these last year for my kids. One I had major derailleur issues less than 5 min after set up while testing it on my property. The derailleur was so if it derailed hard as I came down a small hill and Caused it to mangle the hanger, derailleur and even spokes due to how off the derailleur was. They are supposed to be ready to ride with no derailleur adjustment needed or even referenced in the set up manual. Intense customer service is crap. I live local to their headquarters so brought it in to get fixed. After a month of them not getting back to me. They refused to acknowledge a issue or damage once they got it in the shop. They wouldn't even give me a new $5 hanger which was visibly bent. I brought it straight back to Costco. It was a brand new bike damaged due to an intense issue and they refused responsibility I'll never buy an intense bike again after that bs. all my friends have steered away also as another friend had an issue with warranty. It's not that great of a deal anyway imo. Costco is the deal as you can return the crappy bike. If you do get one, get the derailleur adjusted before you ride it. Better yet… don't buy it!
