Unless you are thinking about the possibility of getting into a car crash, why are you even considering a car seat? Unless you get into an accident, your baby is just as safe riding in a bassinet or your kid is just as safe unbuckled in the back seat. Car seats are designed for in an attempt to further protect children in a crash, so I think it's completely reasonable to consider all aspects of a crash if it happens.

My point is that insurance looks for any reason not to pay and using an expired car seat is a solid reason that they will notice if you get into an accident.

It may be BS that car seats have such short expiration dates (not arguing that point), but complaining about it in an online forum and then using an expired seat won't change the fact that insurance probably isn't going to pay for injuries sustained in an expired seat. If you want real change, write to your congressman or create a car seat company with seats that don't expire so soon—there's obviously a market for it.

2-3 years later, no way there is a significant change in technology and research.

There are more advances in cars and safety, yet there are no recalls on our cars for advances.

Use some common sense people. And no, I am not a cheapo person. I have nuna car seats. Things do not deteriorate and I would gladly pass this along to someone if they wanted it.

Most car seats expire at the 10 year mark unless otherwise stated. UV and heat can reduce the structural rigidity of plastic and it's likely most car seats sit and stay inside the car 24/7. Besides a few that include metal reinforcements, most are structurally 100% plastic.

Car seats used to be one of the most recalled items on the market and that's been reduced over the years along with kid injuries and fatalities decreasing in that same time. A lot of this is attributed to increased knowledge about how to make a good car seat but it can also be attributed to lack of people using older and possibly compromised car seats.

So arguing about the expiration date existing is just dumb, especially when there are far better things to worry about when it comes to consumer waste than a car seat is concerned.

There is a massive subset of people, including an entire generation that were not themselves put in car seats, that only use them because they HAVE to legally. While my example is absurd, a TON of people would not think twice about using, say, a 20 year old car seat from 2002 which would indeed be dangerous. If it's in visually good condition and you haven't seen the newer seats, it doesn't LOOK unsafe, and it's inherently difficult to convince the 40-something that they raised their children in a car seat that is considered unsafe today.

In any case nobody said anything about 2-3 years, it's more like 6-10 years (though some people, including "slickdealers", may have bought a 2-3 year old car seat in the first place). The real issue is that it exceeds the manufacturer's testing moreso than the "plastic has deteriorated".

last time this ran at my target there was a big bin to throw whatever you brought and a coupon to scan on the bin. some people just scanned the coupon.

Thank you for mentioning this. I signed up for the 20% coupon yesterday morning and it arrived this afternoon. I was able to make two separate orders for two chicco booster seats (same price as Target); used the coupon each time with no issues. Also, they didn't charge tax so that was $6 in additional savings.

A big part of this is uv exposure specifically plastic frames and the seat belt material. The plastic frame and stitching can become weakened and in the event of a crash could fail and prevent restraining a child correctly.

I got a convertible car seat and we just took the back off to make it a booster for the kid earlier this year. And my car got a break in a few weeks ago (forgot to lock the car) and they took the booster..now I have the upper part of the car seat..I wonder if target would take that? It's pretty useless junk now. I asked the trash company, they wouldn't take it...they said it's still a car seat :/

It's certainly worth a shot. They don't really seem to care when you drop it in the bin.
