Might as well just buy a car seat from buybuybaby and use their 20% off coupon all day long. Buybuybaby also have a stackable promo running currently on car seats…$25 reward if you spend $100, $50 reward if you spend $200, etc.

Edit: the additional MyFund reward promo ended 2 days ago. The same promo comes back every month or two from what I've seen so far.

I would assume new safety regulations and plastic deterioration are some reasons...also....I'm sure there is some greed weaved in there as well

Just dropped off our car seat at our local Target...was the first to put one in the large box. Scanned the bar code with my Target app; go to Wallet; on top, scroll through the offers until you see the 20% off offer; then tap the "+" to add to your wallet.

No experience, but there are no rules stating you cannot or should not use expired car seats. I would say it's akin to eating expired food and having to go to the hospital, but at least there's data involved there showing that expired foods sometimes have bacteria, etc, but there's no real data proving an expired car seat is unsafe, so the insurance company would have a very hard time denying a claim based on that alone. Now, do you know the full history of said car seat? Has it been in a crash before? Has it been installed properly? Those are the real questions. Should the insurance company deny your claim because you're not in a $120k car that would have predicted the crash and stopped ahead of time? Are your tires filled to the proper pressure? Anyway, you get the point, sad that this is a perfectly valid point you are making for the US, but I doubt it would be an actual issue until there's data to support it. Thanks for thinking of it.

With all this talk of expired car seats being ok, does anyone have experience with trying to get hospital bills related to a car crash for their child paid for by insurance if their kid was sitting in an expired seat (including when it's completely the other driver's fault and the driver has fully loaded insurance)?

Hope that never happens to anyone, but in the context of not having medical bills paid for (and knowing that you did everything you could to protect your child), a new car seat seems pretty cheap to me.

While there's been no direct studies on car seats, the plastics material that they are made of (polypropylene) have been studied pretty extensively. I have no doubt that the legal guys and the marketing guys are the ones who are communicating with said bloggers and info websites - this is primarily a legal/liability issue rather than a material science issue.

Here's what is known about plastics: They do not do well with extensive UV exposure. They don't do well over time with temperature ups/downs. It is also known that the manufacturing process and the machines used to form up the plastics from pellets also have an effect on the plastic also.

These variables (temp, elements exposure) along with the manufacturing process variability (the amount of heat used to form up the plastics has a big effect on durability/pliability) can cause that end of useful "life" to be on the order of years rather than a specific year. So where does that date come from? It's the safe number assuming a bunch of numbers on those variables. (Edit: The legal guys basically told the engineers to give them a number and the engineers hee and hawed until threatened then gave an age that was totally inside the safe zone of even atypical exposure. )

Here's a study on alternative filler material versus straight polypropylene. I'm including it to show that plastics do "age". Their mechanical properties wane. They "aged" the material with up to 1000 hours of UV and temperature. They then tested material properties including pressure to crack. https://mdpi-res.com/d_attachment...-00338.pdf

Thanks. Where is this box? Baby section or at the entrance?

I have 3 in my garage. If anyone wants one for free to trade in and willing to travel to Suffolk county, NY, I can bring it over to this Target to meet up.

The real "deal" here is that Target will recycle your old car seat for free. Very few places recycle car seats, and they're hard to resell for obvious reasons. Freeing up space in the garage is worth way more to me than a 20% off coupon.

I stopped by my local target in SoCal (Santa Ana) and they were under the impression the promo started in May so they had no box out for my car seat.. Customer service rep I chatted with online also thought it started in may.

They were still nice enough to take 20% off the car seat I wanted at the store. Was able to apply it to a car seat that already had 70$ off. If you don't see the box out, talk to guest services and they should be able to help you out

Great promo but no longer active. I just double checked with buy buy baby CS.

I got a convertible car seat and we just took the back off to make it a booster for the kid earlier this year. And my car got a break in a few weeks ago (forgot to lock the car) and they took the booster..now I have the upper part of the car seat..I wonder if target would take that? It's pretty useless junk now. I asked the trash company, they wouldn't take it...they said it's still a car seat :/
at my store no one is paying attention to what is put in the bin.

Also, if you have full insurance on your vehicle - the insurance company is responsible to replace the child safety car seats. So make sure you reach out to them before buying new ones yourself!

Wish target gave at least a gift card. I have two car seats and one stroller that my children grew out of. But I don't need a coupon for new car seat or stroller.

Signed up for target baby registry and should receive a 15% coupon in 2 weeks to use. Can anyone verify the registry coupon is stackable with this 20% car seat promo?
