My Dell laptop works well. My problem is the anti-glare aka matte screen. It looks washed out especially for text. It needs more nits of brightness to power through the matte. Any laptop you buy, try to get the lowdown on the nits. I have an HP 17.3" laptop that has HD+ resolution of 1600 x 900. The screen is not anti-glare and is called Brightview by HP. I prefer this to my Dell with FHD.
I am not a fan of anti-glare laptop displays, but it seems that more and more manufacturers are coming out with them. If you buy an HP laptop that has an IPS screen, look for one with 300 nits instead of 250 nits and pay attention to what the NTSC score is. It might be 45%. It might be 100%. It might be something in between.

The Xe version is closer to like a Nvidia 1030 maybe. Xe is better than the other Intel UHD 600/700 level but definitely not near as good as a discrete GPU

So far, they both are working great for school and surfing the net. Touch screen is nice.
The hinges are weak.
Can anyone recommend a refurbished laptop at the $250 range? I'm semi-retired and just don't need all the power/memory of the new ones. Thanks
