Yamaha FG800 is all I have to say. It's only $20 more ($220), a much better sounding guitar, and will age much better. It's a solid-top, to boot. It's a full size acoustic, btw. It's not an acoustic electric, but the electronics on these are terrible, anyways.

Honestly, when I had a cheap guitar, I didn't even want to learn it. The action was too high and it killed my fingers. Once I upgraded to a decent entry guitar, learning became so much easier. A couple years later and I play guitar.

Try the Yamaha FG800 as someone else mentioned.

Youtube. Justin Sandercoe (justinguitar) and Marty Schwartz (guitarjamz) are two popular and effective instructors for beginners.

For free. You can find ways to pay them later if you feel obliged.

Notes on this guitar-

I've seen these in the wild. They're a bit smaller than you expect, so might be good for younger players. They look really nice and the neck is thin and comfortable. These are laminate guitars so I wouldn't expect them to age very well (laminate tends to be sensitive to humidity and warps rather than 'matures'). Electronics on it are terrible.

For this price, it would be a decent office guitar or something for camping/travel.

Would this be decent for a first timer who doesn't want to spend too much?

All wooden acoustic guitars need to be kept in 45-55 humidity otherwise they tend to warp and have issues with the neck and frets. That is why when storing an acoustic instrument you need to store it with humidity packs.

The Yamahas are so much nicer for the money. FG800-FG850 are amazing, i was at Sam Ash a few days ago looking at them. the FS series is super nice as well. After looking at a bunch of guitars sub 500 dollars, I ended up buying a Taylor 214ce plus. Thats a guitar that costs 3-4x the price of this guitar.

Modern signal processing makes a acoustic/electrics sound stellar in a live environment. If the use case requires acoustic/electric the Yamaha won't work. Apples/oranges comparison.

Are any acoustic electronics really good? My Martin has a Fishman Undersaddle piezo that I was impressed with.. until I compared a recording of the same song using my AT2020 Condenser. It's horribly "tinny" sounding and lacks the rich tone of the Martin.

taylor ES2 is quite good, but not comparable to a decent external mic.

Second this. I was debating between the FG800 and 830. Finally got the Yamaha FG830. It holds the tune even after a month of not playing.

Looking for a concert size myself so FG800-830 all ya want but its too bulky for my needs.
Is the FS800-830 as good as the FG and better than this Fender?

Right on.. I had my heart set on a Taylor then the deal for the Martin Solid came through and I gambled. No regrets... I absolutely adore the guitar... and considering I have only been playing a few months it was good to keep it under a grand.

I learned many things since picking up the hobby. Most significant, do not tell music store salesmen you just started playing and have bought an electric, acoustic and bass all in the past few months... They will have a guitar in your hands and pressuring you like one of the after school specials about drugs from the 80's.
