instore, online? link?
Online, $4.99 shipping, also instore. The Costco near me had seven a week ago, so I bought one for my mother-in-law. This will last until 4/22 with a limit of two per member. It's somewhat of a screaming deal.

Not a super significant difference from the iPad air 4th gen vs the iPad air 5th gen. If you can live with 64gb storage, Costco is selling the iPad air 4th gen with 64gb for $100 off or for $469.
The $469 2020 iPad Air (4th Gen) is closer to the $319 2021 iPad (9th Gen) in performance. The 2020 iPad Air (4th Gen) is only 23% faster than the 2021 iPad (9th Gen). The $569 2022 iPad Air (5th Gen) is 124% faster than the 2021 iPad (9th Gen).

Real-life, most users will not see a difference. Wife has gen 4, I have gen 5 as I too wanted the M1 dazzle-dazzle. No difference in our mundane usage.

Now if we're talking future proofing (and that's a valid argument) then M1 may be worth it. Or for more advanced usage (eg user grows, say, from just web browsing to advanced graphics design), then there is that as well. Also some people want better resale value, of course M1 wins there.

Apple pricing team is not stupid. Their whole business model is to make the choice difficult, knowing that many will pay more for reasons like the above even if they are just in the user's mind. And if they don't, we'll that's just fine too.

Also, the iPad 9 also has a much better Selfie Cam (12MP x 1.2MP), which can be important if you're using it for videocalls.

$70 off MSRP + 5% back with a Prime credit card brings it to over $100 off. Yeah, I consider that a good deal.

This has the M1 which is the same processor that the Macbook Pros have been spanking the competition with.

Thanks! I'm all over the place. I tend to keep my tablets for 4+ years (I'm still rocking a Tab S3, but the aspect ratio is driving me nuts). Still trying to decide if an Android tablet will do, or switch over to ios to match my phone....decisions decisions.

I bought both ( Air 5 and Pro ) last week and have been testing them both vigorously to decide which to keep..

Here's what I've observed so far :

- the Pro is smoother ( well duh, it has a 120 hz refresh rate Vs 60 on the Air ) especially if drawing. Is it worth the extra dough ? Not for me since I barely, if ever, draw! I do notice the slight jitter when scrolling because I had the 2017 iPad Pro prior ( also had 120 Hz refresh ) and been using the iPhone ( currently the 13 Pro Max )

Unless you have both iPads side-by-side, and/or are very sensitive to screen refresh, I doubt it will bother you.

- The speakers are def. better ( have more depth and bass ) on the Pro ( 4 vs 2 on the Air ). That said, the speakers on the Air are by no means tinny or low! I usually use my Airpods, so this point is rather moot for me.

- The Pro has better build quality, imo. There is a bit of give on the Air's body ( some folks on Reddit and MacRumors ) have complained ( even returned ) the Air due to creaky backplates and/or shadows on the screen when holding the Air (w/o a case) or with a pencil. I have no such issues on mine, but the Air does feel a bit lacking in terms of rigidity.

- People mention the difference in brightness ( 600 nits on the Pro Vs 500 on the Air ).. Has not bothered me a bit! It's plenty bright, especially indoors.

- Battery life and performance are pretty much the same, as expected.

- I've never used the cameras on any of the iPads I've owned, so can't comment on that at all.

However, I'm still only a bit undecided due to the screen refresh rate! Logically, the Air ( heck, I could even use the base 10.2 lol ) makes more sense for my use case ( browsing, social media, streaming, Facetiming, and YouTube ) but.. tech greed and want laugh out loud

Very much agree that most users using medium grade iPads, 4th and 5th air, 9th iPad, will not notice much of a difference. My wife has the iPad Pro and without question it's fast, but at a higher price point. For everyday common use the iPad Air 4th generation currently discounted at Costco is a good deal.

This or wait for a deal on the 256 11" iPad Pro?

Will mainly be for watching movies on the plane.
You will probably be fine with this air but if your a screen snob then hold out for the pro if you want the mini led panel and 120 Hz.

Like the previous comment said just go with the base model iPad if media consumption is your use case. You can get those for under $300. The Air and Pro are super computers now. They've gotten so good my wife can do her entire job from one, she doesn't need a laptop anymore. As for switching to iPadOS, if you have AirPods it's a no brainer. They handoff between devices seamlessly and actually remember your volume level and settings. I used to do mixed manufactures as well but once I went all apple it made everything much smoother and also saved me from carrying multiple headphones or manually switching Bluetooth every time I went from phone to tablet to computer.
