Anyone that complains about Hue- great. They clearly aren't for you.

I have a bunch of hue lights (that I've bought at reasonable sale prices over the years) and a few other brand outlets and lights. The Hue ones have been FLAWLESS and never given me issue. They work great with Alexa and Apple HomeKit.

They cost more than others but are definitely worth it.

Always confused by these things. Do you need buy a separate bridge or not for it to work with Alexa?

I think you need to buy something else, right?

What other ones have you used? I also have Govee, Wyze, and GE and the Hues are the only ones that have ever given me trouble with basically every facet of their functionality. From not keeping color/theme changes, disconnecting from Alexa both at the device and hub level, all the way to the double sided tape on these strips being absolutely atrocious.

I would highly recommend the Wyze 16' Light Strip over this Hue 9' light strip any day of the week. Even before you start comparing the $20 price tag.
Honestly I'd have to look and see what exactly I have, but off the top of my head some govee, Wyze, LIFX, a lot of Hues, and then some smart outlets: Amazon, Wyze, and meross.

I can only speak from my experience, but in the years I've been using Hue I haven't had one issue.

Ordered 2. Did inflation shrink these things or is this just bad Costco math because 80"+40" does not equal 9 ft. Every hue strip I have is 80 inches and every extension has been 40 inches.

I love my hues. But the issue I have is that the strips are pretty fragile if you move them around at all. I had 2 strips where the last half turned green, and would not change. Apparently if the lights are coiled or flexed too hard, this happens.

Never had that issue with govee, or 2 other companies I have around the house. But the others aren't nearly as reliable.
My Hue strips do that as well. I was able to fix mine by essentially pinching them in a specific location right before the discolored section of the strip. It takes a bit of trial and error to find the exact spot but once you do, pinch that spot with a medium sized binder clip or use a key ring and you should be good to go.

Wyze ecosystem, customer service, and ethics are terrible.

I'm in the process of dumping all my stuff after they withheld security vulnerabilities from consumers, lied about what was included, lied about no monthly fees, and stopped supporting sense devices about a year after release, and even when customers found the flaw in the V1 sense devices, they refused to do anything to help.

Wyze is garbage, and their shotgun approach to regular release dates of non- IOT devices shows it's just a money grab on cheap devices with nothing to support any of it.

Would 9' of light be enough to replace the output of two 4' fluorescent bulbs? I have a really old light fixture in my living room I'd like to replace and it uses fluorescent bulbs.

Semi related:

I have a bookshelf, 3 to be exact each with about 5 shelves

I use it for bourbon, not books

I'd love to be able to light up the shelves. However how would I be able to do so given there are 5 shelves and no way to reach one to the next and the 3 bookshelves themselves while adjacent to each other and screwed in only have minor openings between each other for a small wire at best.

Suggestions?

If you aren't married to having multi colors for your lighting, I recommend using one 32' Govee warm white light strip per bookcase. They're relatively cheap and can be plugged into the same power strip to turn on and off together. Litecessory makes a 2-prong connector which goes from LED strip in one side to bare wires on the other. Use Monoprice #18 or #20 CL2 copper speaker wire to connect the vertical segments together. Strip, twist, and tin the wires before pressing into connector with small flathead screwdriver. If all of the wires and connectors are well-hidden, it makes a fantastically bright & even display.

I prefer Philips/Signify for all of my smart lighting, but I prefer Govee warm white for "non -smart" applications where cutting is involved.

Just did my mom's hutch with the govee warm white. 3 rows, little t-splicers for the two. Connected to a Rotary dimmer mounted on the back.

What can be done with 9ft though?

Complain or not, they're simply not worth it in terms of value. If this was the price at 20ft, then I'd consider it.

And no matter how good they are, it can't be a 300%-500% value to equal the price difference.

I ordered a 9ft just to see the hubbub

Awesome deal thanks for the heads up. In for 2

I was actually in the market for a couple more hue strips, so the timing was perfect.

Buy a spool of the low voltage wire and some of the connectors. Work off the back of the shelving unit. Drill small holes near the back side edge just underneath each shelf.

Cut the strips to length (do not stick them up yet). Connecter [amazon.com] with free wire to the strip, free wire through the hole. Do that for each shelf.

Run a length of the low voltage wire up the back side of the unit. Add in one of these splicers [amazon.com]for each shelf with thr main wire running up through each splicer. Don't really need one for the top shelf. I just shrink wrapped the top shelf connector.

At the bottom the wire run connects to your switch, dimmer, smart module or whatever that plugs into the wall. Test the setup. When you know it works, then adhere the strips to the underside of the shelf. Can staple gun the wiring on the back to clean it up, and I used a command strip to mount the dimmer.

If there are shelves around eye level where you see the individual lights, just hit Lowes or HD and buy whatever thin wood strip that matches the color, cut to length and place it just in front of the light strip. Doesn't take much.

If you look up the splices above, you'll probably see recommendations for various connectors. Buy in bulk because once you do one project, doing future ones get easier.

I did lighting across the back of my headboard. Next up is roughly outlining the bureau mirror. My headboard lights are smart as is my bed table light so I just tell Google to turn on/off the bedroom lights.
