Was approved for this card @80K signup bonus a couple weeks ago. Some notes:
This is a great card for anyone who travels or plans to soon travel!
Call your local branch and see if they offer 80K signup + first year fee waived. If you do apply in branch, allot at least 30 minutes for this .
If you have a Peloton membership, note that the Preferred will credit you $60 total off fees, but I think only through June, so act quick!
I didn't get my card after a week, despite a 1-2 day delivery promise. I called in, and they said, oh, whoops, we forgot to ship it! (and they then indeed shipped it 2nd day air via UPS).
You'll get the most value from the 80K points BY FAR by transferring them strategically to airline/hotel partners (most often: United and Hyatt). Do some reading across blogs to learn more.
I know when I applied for this card, I did it in the branch and got a $125 grocery credit incentive. Basically every time I shopped at a grocery store I received a credit back until the $125 credit was maxed…. It may be worth it to call a banker & ask if they have that promo as it was only for in branch applications, not online & worth it to a trip to the bank, if you ask me!
I don't think there's been a better offer on the reserve in many years?
Outside of the SUB the CS > CSP used to be a no brainer, but with the higher AF on the CSR, and the improved benefits/earn on CSP it's a tougher choice now.
Today it's $155 more (removing the travel credit from the price difference) for CSR...
SUPER generously if we count the GE/TSA credit as $20 a year that drops it to $135/yr more for CSR.
For the $135 you get:
Priority Pass (still the good one that includes restaurants unlike Amex)
Marginally better travel insurance coverage
"free" roadside assitance (up to 4 calls a year, max $50 per call)
You do get significantly better purchase protection (10k per claim instead of $500- but then I'm buying most expensive stuff with a Citi card for 2 years of extra warranty anyway)
1.5x for your points in the travel portal vs 1.25 for CSP- but this is rarely a worthwhile use of points for most folks compare to transfers.
10x points (vs 5x on CSP) for cash spend in the travel portal or Chase Dining portals- but those again aren't frequently the ideal way to book for most folks anyway.
So as I say, when this was $35-55/yr it was easy... ONE 2 person use of priority pass at an airport restaurant more than covered this- if you get anything out of any other benefit you're golden.
At $135 it's much more marginal for many.

Does anyone know if I link this card to my PayPal account and set it as my primary funding and pay someone thorough PayPal will it count towards the $4000 purchase threshold?

I don't see why it wouldn't but be aware that the person you're paying will be paying whatever fees Chase (and maybe Paypal?) charges a seller on a transaction.

I cancelled this card last week. I have to wait 4 years to sign up again in order to get this type of promo, right?
If it's been more than 48 months since your last bonus and you hold no other sapphire cards you can reapply. Usually need to wait a week before you reapply. I reapplied after a week of downgrading my previous sapphire preferred and am eligible for the bonus again

So I believe I would pay the fee on my end if I paid them with PayPal using the linked credit card. So say I sent them $2000 then I would be charged 2.9% + $0.30 fees on top of the $2000, but they will get the $2000. I think that is how PP works. I think for Venmo or Zelle there might also be a cash advance fee I would be charged.
For people who dont know what to spend 4k. I am big costco user. So, i usually buy a shop card worth 1k-2k depending on how much left to qualify for the promotion.
I just came back from the new Chase branch that they opened a few minutes from my house. I opened a business checking account with a $20k deposit and if I spend $4k in the next 90 days and have 5 transactions through the account, they'll give me a bonus of $750. While there I tried to see if I had received a Sapphire bonus within the past 48 months but neither the person behind the desk, the person she called nor the person that person linked us to (the "Sapphire specialist") was able to tell me or even figure out if I'd ever had a sapphire account before. I would take that as gold except they were also telling me I've never closed any Chase accounts in the past and I know that's not correct... I closed a Chase Freedom account last year and I'm pretty sure I've had other Chase accounts in the past.
So anyway, I went ahead an opened a Sapphire Preferred credit card and we'll see if I get the bonus. The $95 AF was waived for the first year. Process took about an hour.
Edit: I don't have to spend $4k for the checking acct to qualify for a bonus. I was mixing that up with the requirements for the sapphire card.
If you open the card in the branch for having the AF waived for first year, can you still add refer a friend details in the branch?
I don't have many purchases typically that would fulfill spending $4k in 3 months.
what are some ways I can artificially spend this? Do Paypal/venmo transfers work?
Pay any bills like utilities/insurances/medical in advance. Otherwise paypal/venmo will work too but 2.9% fee will apply. Keep it as last option unless no other options working out.

I'm wondering this as well.

I don't think any cc company is going to let a transaction go through their system without them collecting their fee.

Pay taxes with it. 2% ish to get bonus is ok
Just go ahead and apply. If you are not eligible for the bonus, you will instantly be rejected without costing you a hard pull.
