  • Humanity has colonized the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond—but the stars are still out of our reach.
  • Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for—and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
  • Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Great books. I'm reading number 8 of 9 books. May be my favorite series.

Same... but don't forget the novellas. They are just as good. The audiobooks are also well done and may be available for free rental via your local library.

Yes, there is a lot. It's a book about space, the struggle to survive, factions at war and the ways in which humanity discovers ancient power and immediately turns to abusing it.

The language is harsh all throughout the series. People say bad stuff, mean stuff, die (a lot) and so on. It's all in context and all essential in my opinion. Please be aware of it as you or anyone decides to read the series.

It is by far my favorite sci-fi and I only wish I had another opportunity to go into it blind. For 3 bucks, it's hardly a loss to give it a chance.

(P.S. I also think the audiobooks are fantastic - Jefferson Mayes is incredible)

Very good sci-fi series. I bought the first one paper back when I was browsing B&N because the cover looked cool and I saw it was endorsed by GRRM. And this was back when it was the only book in the series.

Absolutely, Idk why they slipped my mind! Great little additions. I started reading them in between the main story just to slow me down before I blew through the series too fast. It didn't work, the novellas were good enough to make me want more. Now I'm on Tiamat's Wrath. The amazon (yes, I know it wasn't originally on amazon) show is what got me started in the first place. Once I realized the books were really different but even better I couldn't believe it. Also if anyone is into audiobooks, Jefferson Mays is pretty phenomenal!

Funny you should mention this cuz I just had a notification that this audio book was now ready to be borrowed from my reserved books. Weird timing.

Second the audiobook referral. They are excellent, I'm obviously biased because I love the series and finished it as well as fanboy hard for the show, but anyone who likes scifi who hasn't read any of the series should.

Overhyped in my opinion. Character descriptions are ridiculous, "Rebecca Byers, the comm officer on duty, could have been bred from a shark and a hatchet..."

Surely you've got much better series to suggest then!

You're definitely entitled to your opinion. It does make me wonder how you actually managed to completely avoid the diverse and interesting group of "main" characters to choose one of the hundreds of other supporting characters that are just simply part of the expanse universe to base your point on. Not to mention that the author took the time to give most, if not ALL, of the other supporting characters descriptions and backgrounds. Actually, you've reminded me and probably others that sometimes its easy to ignore how impressive a feat like that actually is.

Thank you. At least you recognize that others have different opinions. Those 6 downvotes are proof of the "you call my favorite book bad you're wrong" mentality. Sometimes popular series don't appeal to everyone and that's ok

In other words they wrote nine books in less time it took GRRM to write one. He needs a writing partner.

Great series, just finished Leviathan Falls. I gave up on the Amazon show in season 3 but maybe because I started with the books.

For me, all the books were available free through the public library, so if you want a really slick deal look into that option.

Over the past couple years I've read the entire series. I definitely think it's worth it.
