EA is basically Volkswagen's "penalty" for the whole diesel-gate scandal from a few years back. They were ordered to spend something like $2 billion on EV charging infrastructure.
I just run an extension cord from my neighbor's house. 👍🏻
Gonna be real on this. I'd rather just pay the few dollars to charge normally elsewhere instead of waiting an hour or more in line. I hope people value their time more than a few dollars.

They still charge by time in Texas. Brutal costs. Volta ones are cool and worth checking if you have any in your area. They are putting them at malls and movie theaters. They are free from what I have seen and use ads at the "pump". Hoping they spread and do well.
Volta is a win win situation I hope so too

EVs are coming, so that isn't a debate. Most don't charge while out running around anyway. Takes a parking spot to visit some place regardless. Can't even touch point 3 sigh.. As for the mall, they will likely need many more, so putting them anywhere you spend time such as strip centers, entertainment centers, doctor's offices will be needed. Perhaps even new employer will have them.

As for someone else paying, someone always pays. That is true, but some models work well via ads and some wish to pay to avoid ads. Seems like I recall some websites and media streams work that way too... humm..

Up voted for supporting EV charging awareness, not suggesting specifically anyone use EA over others outside of Earth Day freebie day.

Sometimes I have trouble charging at EA stations, but every time I've had to call their customer service, they've always been helpful and patient.

True, but EVs can be charged while doing groceries or other shopping, while working, sleeping, eating at a restaurant, basically while your car is parked at many places (more every day). Also EVs don't require regular maintenance (that take hours or days), are more fun to drive and what's more important won't continue killing the planet with emissions.

Free chargers suck. I live in a suburb of LA and we have had Chargepoint and now Volta that is free a mile a way from my house at a Dept Store. Other EV owners (typically Tesla's) leave their cars there for hours on end. As soon as the Chargepoint went to a pay model it was always available. I have no problem paying the prices they charge. They just installed the Volta chargers in and guess who is always parked there.... LMAOLMAO

Volta's Free DC fast chargers are great if you have some in your area. But as for "Brutal Costs" with Texas EA chargers, they don't seem that bad. They charge $0.32/min for charge rates of more than 50kW. If you've got a newer EV that can pull an average of 125kW for 20 minutes, that's only $6.40 for about 41kWh. If you get around 3.5 mi/kWh, that's 143 miles for $6.40. If you don't mind the 20 minute wait, that's pretty cheap for that many miles.

My EV will only pull up to a relatively slow 50kW (about 48kWh in practice). For that charge rate, it's $0.16/min. $3.20 for 16.7kWh. I easily get over 4mi/kWh most days, so that's about 65 miles for $3.20. Still pretty cheap.

Higher-power charging curves complicate matters, so the above is an estimate. I only fast charge on road trips, but for 99% of my driving, a plain old 110V outlet will do just fine. I get about 40miles of range overnight. There's a free L2 charger nearby that I use frequently that puts on about 25 miles of range every hour. Between the free L2 and my 110V home charger, that suits my needs just fine, and inexpensively, too.

I hope you're kidding. EVs may not "kill the planet" in your neighborhood or your city, but they certainly do wherever the battery elements are mined, processed, manufactured into batteries and then disposed of. Some of that may not even take place in your country, but since you mentioned "the planet", I would hope you care about toxic elements in all parts of the world.

Ok, so "Brutal" might have been a little harsh. I am still feeling the pain of when a Blink station was at the movie theater and it was over $10 to charge a Volt back in the day for 40 miles. It cost about a $1 for same at home. They are coming down in costs, but still should be better in areas where electricity is cheap like many areas of Texas.

Sadly there's no perfect solution, but we have to choose the one that causes less damage or can even reverse some, currently Climate Change is a much bigger threat to humanity and the whole planet than mining activity related to batteries.

"One" station usually has at least 8 DC fast chargers. PlugShare app will give you more info on availability like "one broken charger" or "located beside Mexican restaurant" if you wanted to see what's available in your area.
