3rd EV, 2nd Tesla - once you drive electric cars and then ...drive any dino fuel car... you feel like the flintstones. They are better at everything. Environmental issues aside.
That said, the other DC charging networks suck ass. Had many problems charging a VW on electrify America (a VW owned company). The superiority of the supercharger network can't be understated. That said, we use it a coupe times a year - the rest is at home charging (+solar roof) - very nice time to have no electric bill, no gasoline bill, natural gas heating bill cut in half. Solar panel cost justification is accelerating huge with the elevated energy prices...
You must not use electricity at all. I have tesla vehicles and their solar panels with 3 powerwalls and still need to pull from the grid. Having solar may help but you still touch the grid. On cloudy days you are farked. Tesla solar support sucks so you may be down for months until they come fix their crap. Be honest. Ev cars are great and do help somewhat but we have a long way to go.
If it was at minimum a week worth of free charging it'd be worth considering, but one day? The most you'd save would be about the same $$$ amount as one of those coffee milkshakes at Starbucks.
For all those deciding to throw out talking points from their favorite news outlet that feeds them what they want to hear (both sides here), let's cut through the rhetoric:
- There's less "fueling" infrastructure out there for EVs than there is for gas cars. That being said, it's really not hard to be able to charge from home if you own, or charge at work, or find a good spot near home with a little effort. But yes, I will not have an option to "fuel" my EV every 2 miles I drive, and no, I can't "fuel up" in 10 minutes.
- EVs cradle to grave are better for the environment than gas cars. They are far from perfect. They still require mining, manufacturing, and electricity generation, but they are definitely better, and it's not close. Especially if you pay the premium to your utility to buy clean energy.
- EVs cost a small fraction of gas cars to operate. My family owns a gas-guzzling SUV and a Tesla. The SUV fuel cost is approximately 8X the EV, plus the EV has no oil changes, brake jobs, lubricated seals, hoses, etc. to go bad. Yes, the batteries will degrade, and yes, eventually the electric motors will die. But the expected lifespan of those components are much longer than the engine and transmission in our gas SUV.
- I didn't buy an EV until it was cost effective, well featured, and fun to drive. The environmental benefit is nice, but was quite far down our priority list. The only thing I gave up was the ability to go 300 miles without stopping. Now it's 200 miles, and the stops require 20 more minutes than the SUV and pre-planning to know where they are. That being said, when you count going to the bathroom, grabbing a snack, and stretching legs, it usually doesn't actually waste any time.
Only one here in NYC and it's in bumblef Queens. Thanks for posting though
