The PFE on this mask is 89% at 69 pa breathing. You get what you pay for.......

I do not know why the PFE was tested to be at 89% but all face mask that are authorized by the FDA to be declared as a surgical mask are required to meet the PFE minimum of 95%.

I do it to save on sunblock. Terrible tanline, but totally worth it to keep my mouth appearing youthful for when this pandemic ends (because it is most definitely ongoing).

The answer is ALL SURGICAL MASKS OFFER LITTLE IF ANY PROTECTION TO THE WEARER.
https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/07...k-covid-19

It's likely that face masks, by blocking even some of the virus-carrying droplets you inhale, can reduce your risk of falling seriously ill from COVID-19, according to Monica Gandhi, MD, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco.

"The more virus you get into your body, the more sick you are likely to get," she said.
.....
Experts quickly focused on differences among patients, such as age and co-morbidities, that can affect their chances of severe illness. But the details of two outbreaks on cruise ships spurred Gandhi to think that viral dose could be another important determinant of the course of the new illness.

Surgical Mask may not prevent 100% of virus but if it reduce virus load by 60%~80%, it likely reduce your risk of falling seriously ill.
The idea is the smaller amount of virus you get, the easier for you to fight it off more quickly before it cause more severe symptom. This is just like how live virus flu vaccine works.

For those don't know, Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine may use live virus.

Good masks, bought 5 boxes last time it was on sale at this price.
I have the BYD N95 as well for traveling or when I'll be around people for a long period of time.

You are confused. Mandates are just something that the government uses to tell you what you can and cannot do. People should have the freedom to make their own decision about whether they want to wear a mask or not, and no one should care one way or the other what each other decides. On top of that, folks have also realized that their allergies are much better when they wear a mask this time of year.
Do you drive? Do you drive with or without the driver license? Or do you pay rent to property tax? It's not because you do all that out of the goodness of your heart but you do it because someone told you have too

Information from 2020?
"Surgical Mask may not prevent 100% of virus but if it reduce virus load by 60%~80%, it likely reduce your risk of falling seriously ill. " You gotta be kidding me. That's just bullshit.
Do not spread wrong information. You need a mask which has a MB(Melt Blown) filter with N95 level. Surgical Masks don't have that level of filter.

The cases sited in this article as support that surgical masks protect the wearer involve situations where universal masking was used. This is the case in the cruise ship example they sites as well as masking in Asian countries. The reduced viral load could very well be a result of the infected person passing along less virus because he was wearing a surgical mask as opposed to the surgical mask providing a benefit to healthy individuals.

If anything, this simply proves what I said in my original post… masks may offer protection to those around the wearer, but little if any protection to the wearer.

There was a Danish mask study where they had a group of 1,000 people wear no masks and another group of 1,000 people wear high quality surgical
Masks. After 30 days, the rate of Covid infection was the same in both groups. There are other studies that came up with similar results.

I wear these under my N95 masks. Has worked well since the pandemic started.

While doing this, I make sure the surgical mask is completely underneath my N95 mask and not overlapping OR overlapping completely, depending on the relative sizes of the two masks. This ensures good seal for N95 mask.

Please note we are not talking about rate of infection. We are talking about the chances of severe illness. As the an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco said....

https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/07...k-covid-19

The idea that viral dose, also known as viral inoculum, determines the degree of illness is not new, said Gandhi. Descriptions of a dose-mortality curve – how much of a virus is needed to cause death in an animal – were first published in 1938. And after all, the earliest vaccines, which were documented in 16th century China, involved exposing someone to a small amount of smallpox virus to induce mild illness and subsequent immunity.

A small number viral particles is more likely to be quelled by the immune system before they can proliferate, said Gandhi.

Researchers have studied dose dependency experimentally with other viral infections, like the flu. In a study with healthy volunteers, those who received a higher dose of the influenza A virus developed more severe symptoms.

And even now, Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine use live flu virus.

Yes, using N95/KN95/KF94, you have much less chance to get sick because it filter 95%+ of the virus. But that still leave <5% virus get pass to you. And of course with <5% virus, it is much harder to get sick. So less virus, less likely you get sick. Or in good quality ASTM surgical mask case, 60~80% less virus (reduces the "inoculum" or dose of the virus), you may still get infected but you less likely get severe symptom. If you go to hospital that full of Covid-19 positive hospitalized patients, the viral load is so high that ASTM surgical mask won't reduce enough to make much differences.

Plus if you have a weakened immune system or some kind of underlying condition (which sometime people don't even know themselves), even less virus may still get you severe symptoms (or death) so the safest is still wearing N95/KN95/KF94 and vaccinated.
