I wear these under my N95 masks. Has worked well since the pandemic started.

While doing this, I make sure the surgical mask is completely underneath my N95 mask and not overlapping OR overlapping completely, depending on the relative sizes of the two masks. This ensures good seal for N95 mask.
Wearing a surgical mask underneath a N95 mask is a bad idea. This will keep the N95 mask from having a proper seal. For the best protection, you should wear the N95 mask by itself.

Please note we are not talking about rate of infection. We are talking about the chances of severe illness. As the an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco said....

It's likely that face masks, by blocking even some of the virus-carrying droplets you inhale, can reduce your risk of falling seriously ill from COVID-19, according to Monica Gandhi, MD, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco.

"The more virus you get into your body, the more sick you are likely to get," she said.

https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/07...k-covid-19

The idea that viral dose, also known as viral inoculum, determines the degree of illness is not new, said Gandhi. Descriptions of a dose-mortality curve – how much of a virus is needed to cause death in an animal – were first published in 1938. And after all, the earliest vaccines, which were documented in 16th century China, involved exposing someone to a small amount of smallpox virus to induce mild illness and subsequent immunity.

A small number viral particles is more likely to be quelled by the immune system before they can proliferate, said Gandhi.

Researchers have studied dose dependency experimentally with other viral infections, like the flu. In a study with healthy volunteers, those who received a higher dose of the influenza A virus developed more severe symptoms.

And even now, Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine use live flu virus.

Yes, using N95/KN95/KF94, you have much less chance to get sick because it filter 95%+ of the virus. But that still leave
The infectious disease specialist is giving his theoretical opinion that has not been substantiated by any actual studies. He merely offers anecdotal evidence in his cruise ship example and the use of masks in Asian countries.

As I previously stated, both these examples are cases that essentially involved universal masking. It is quite possible that the the reduced viral load was a result of less virus in the environment because infected individuals are wearing masks and emitting less virus as opposed to the masks actually filtering and reducing the viral load to healthy individuals. He fails to address this possibility.

So we are not saying reduce viral load cause less severe symptom is incorrect(?). Since we know N95 is not 100% efficient and only filter 95% which mean some virus will still get pass. So we know if we prevent enough virus to get into our body, we won't get infected or get less symptom.
So the disagreement is surgical mask just not filtering enough of virus? Or the question is how much virus will cause you to get severe symptom, then it is very hard to come up with a number since each person immune system is different.

As for surgical mask filtering, Aaron Collins has done some testing and ASTM level 3 surgical mask Filtration Efficiency is 51.6-76.7%.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-zRjrwsMWY
And ASTM Level 3 + Black Cloth with Nose Wire on top (double mask), it get to 91.7% filtration efficiency.
Double mask (with cloth mask) works but may not be a good solution since it needs the right combination which not everyone can get the right combination. Plus the pressure drop is not good when double mask (it may be harder to breath-in than N100).

Instead of double mask with cloth mask, you can use "Mask Fitters" but may not be comfortable and may not looks good. Some Mask Fitters use headband style and it feel just like wearing N95 which some people may not like.

The video show various "Mask Fitters" and filtration efficiency using Mask Fitters with surgical mask.
Armbrust Surgical Mask Filtration Efficiency measure at 63.7%
MaskLab Surgical Mask Filtration Efficiency 78.3%
Armbrust + Badger Mask fitter filtration efficiency at 97.2%

So with variants looming, mask mandates currently being lifted, seems like it's a crash course to another wave in the next month or so. It's interesting, that in January around the high point of the last wave that were advising to upgrade to n95/kn95 and about a month later then mask mandates started being lifted. I'm not yet eligible for next booster due to my age group, but I'm already at 4 months since my 1st booster in early December. Btw not this particular brand but 3 ply surgical masks seems to fog up glasses and ear loops get painful after awhile.

BYD has good quality comparing some random brand I bought on amazon. They also have KN95 rated masks on amazon that's comfortable and gives u extra peace of mind (and cheaper than 3M).

I guess we hit that point in the pandemic when mask snobs emerge. This 65% filtration isn't good enough I need 80%. 80% isn't good enough I need 98%!!!!

People, there's a giant gap on the right and left side where your cheek meets the mask. These mask's aren't protecting you from anything if someone with covid sneezes on you without a mask.

Quite a few reviews said the box they received indicate they are ASTM Level 3.
Search on expiration date in reviews and few posts said the expiration date of the mask they received is Aug 2022 and they purchased the masks in March 2022.
If you keep it in right temperature and humidity, etc, probably can last a bit longer beyond expiration date.
I doubt they protect any better when not expired. Wear a mask for compliance, not because they actually help. Luckily less and less places require them now. That said, I bought 5 boxes for $5 shipped total in a deal a year or so ago and they are nice quality but don't seem much different from the random Amazon/eBay samples of early pandemic days.

I did some drywall work during the pandemic and figured I'd try a few different types to see how well they work against particles much larger than the Vid. Cloth mask was the worst with face pretty white on cheeks and below nose. Surgical was minimally better, KN95 was better but still had white dust under my nose. And yes, I fitted them well. The only thing that kept my nose clean was a 3M respirator (the kind with replaceable filter cartridges that sits super tight around your face).

Wrong. You should wear a box of these on top of a P100 mask.

In for 3 boxes to share with family. These were the best surgical masks we got which we used occasionally in places we felt were lower risk. And other surgical masks felt really cheap compared to these. Still use KN95 in crowded places like supermarkets and grocery stores.

Bought 5.. not for the Covid paranoia

I wear a mask when I'm working on the furnace in the crawlspace or trimming the trees in this desert state. I don't want to breath in the dust from the blown in insulation or the tree branches.I also wear one when my sanding stuff.. N95 is better but this is better than nothing..
