Please note we are not talking about rate of infection. We are talking about the chances of severe illness. As the an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco said....
It's likely that face masks, by blocking even some of the virus-carrying droplets you inhale, can reduce your risk of falling seriously ill from COVID-19, according to Monica Gandhi, MD, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco.
"The more virus you get into your body, the more sick you are likely to get," she said.
The idea that viral dose, also known as viral inoculum, determines the degree of illness is not new, said Gandhi. Descriptions of a dose-mortality curve – how much of a virus is needed to cause death in an animal – were first published in 1938. And after all, the earliest vaccines, which were documented in 16th century China, involved exposing someone to a small amount of smallpox virus to induce mild illness and subsequent immunity.
A small number viral particles is more likely to be quelled by the immune system before they can proliferate, said Gandhi.
Researchers have studied dose dependency experimentally with other viral infections, like the flu. In a study with healthy volunteers, those who received a higher dose of the influenza A virus developed more severe symptoms.
And even now, Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine use live flu virus.
Yes, using N95/KN95/KF94, you have much less chance to get sick because it filter 95%+ of the virus. But that still leave <5% virus get pass to you. And of course with <5% virus, it is much harder to get sick. So less virus, less likely you get sick. Or in good quality ASTM surgical mask case, 60~80% less virus (reduces the "inoculum" or dose of the virus), you may still get infected but you less likely get severe symptom. If you go to hospital that full of Covid-19 positive hospitalized patients, the viral load is so high that ASTM surgical mask won't reduce enough to make much differences.
Plus if you have a weakened immune system or some kind of underlying condition (which sometime people don't even know themselves), even less virus may still get you severe symptoms (or death) so the safest is still wearing N95/KN95/KF94 and vaccinated.
all I know in real life, my kids school had an outbreak, in the same classroom as my kid. The only kids that did not get infected were the ones wearing masks. that's enough data for me. there are too many "studies" that claim validity, unless it's from a reputable source, I'd rather be conversative
These masks do not do what people are buying them to do. It's over, everybody. Back to normal.
I think the mindset of everything back to normal and people should just behave the way as they were before Covid-19 is not right.
For example, some people used to go to work even when they were sick with mild symptom. And people now have been seeing obvious sick people in subway, bus going to work without wearing face mask.
Or someone working in their own personal office and their co-worker before would just rush into their office and speak right in front of their face to discuss something. And now, they start doing that again without giving co-worker a chance to see if they want to wear face mask first or ask them if they can come into the office or want to talk in more wide open space outside office, etc. And obviously not keeping social distance and just walk right up to their face and talk without even asking.
Need to remember vaccine is not as effective for people with underlying condition and your co-worker or your co-worker's family may have such condition. People need to be more considerate when pandemic still going on even if they (and their household members) are vaccinated and no underlying condition but people around them may not be the same. If you are Covid-19 positive, even if you have only very mild symptom, please stay at home. And try keep social distancing and ask permission to go to someone else office (or at least come up with understanding with all your team members about that).
This is the same kind of issue with people that has food allergy or color blind and someone just not considerate (since those people don't have problem, they don't even think about others if they have problem or not) and passing around food to someone with food allergy or making slides/presentation that doesn't work well for color blind, etc.
So don't have the mindset of everything back to normal. Should be more considerate and have a mindset that the people around them (or their family member) may have underlying condition (sometime they don't even know), and do the right thing. Come up with an understanding with your team about social distancing and in person meeting, etc. And don't make joke and uncomfortable comment for people that wear mask or don't wear mask.

So with variants looming, mask mandates currently being lifted, seems like it's a crash course to another wave in the next month or so. It's interesting, that in January around the high point of the last wave that were advising to upgrade to n95/kn95 and about a month later then mask mandates started being lifted. I'm not yet eligible for next booster due to my age group, but I'm already at 4 months since my 1st booster in early December. Btw not this particular brand but 3 ply surgical masks seems to fog up glasses and ear loops get painful after awhile.
Yeah I'm sure there will be more surges but people aren't getting as sick anymore as during the first waves. The most susceptible have been cleared out by the first waves and most people now have some level of immunity either through prior exposure or vaccination. Interestingly, most people I know who get sick these days are triple vaccinated and have symptoms similar to those who aren't.
I wear these under my N95 masks. Has worked well since the pandemic started.
While doing this, I make sure the surgical mask is completely underneath my N95 mask and not overlapping OR overlapping completely, depending on the relative sizes of the two masks. This ensures good seal for N95 mask.
You're wearing it wrong. You're supposed to wear the N95 mask directly on your face and the surgical mask is supposed to be worn on top of that.
The cases sited in this article as support that surgical masks protect the wearer involve situations where universal masking was used. This is the case in the cruise ship example they sites as well as masking in Asian countries. The reduced viral load could very well be a result of the infected person passing along less virus because he was wearing a surgical mask as opposed to the surgical mask providing a benefit to healthy individuals.
If anything, this simply proves what I said in my original post… masks may offer protection to those around the wearer, but little if any protection to the wearer.
There was a Danish mask study where they had a group of 1,000 people wear no masks and another group of 1,000 people wear high quality surgical
Masks. After 30 days, the rate of Covid infection was the same in both groups. There are other studies that came up with similar results.

In case people didn't read the news, the mask mandate have been lifted everywhere including planes and public transportation, since it is allergy season I guess people can use these to blow their nose

As Brian Fantana would say: "They've done studies you know..."
"Wearing a facemask that has been ASTM-rated will ensure that your nose and mouth (breathing area) are protected against fluids, microorganisms, and particulates at the level to which the mask is rated (i.e., 1, 2, or 3 specifications). However, these masks do not provide protection again airborne diseases."
Just received the masks. They are a little on the small side the ear loops. My ears will not like these masks over time. So best for shorter duration uses.

Please tell me this is satire.
