Though the fastening modes may be very useful for some applications, I would personally prefer the diminutive size of their newer subcompact model for auto and small engine work.

Totally agree, and I own the stubby version, actually. I swear when I was posting this, I saw the stubby listed by HD in that "other things you may like" section and it was full price, but agree it's a hell of a deal at $79. I think it's a better deal then the one I originally posted, so I added it as the main image.

Repped.

I saw the "stubby" and thought awe crap they made another one I'll eventually want. Luckily, it's the subcompact.

On a disappointing note, Ridgid is finally releasing a powered ratchet and it sucks. The handle bends badly when using it.

Thanks for the post.
Suggested edits: replace "stubby" with "subcompact".
Replace "both" $79 with "each" $79.

I have both of these tools, I got the octane version with a battery for $99 first. Then I just had to see what the deal was with this tiny little subcompact. I like the subcompact better!

I am wondering if I should have just purchased the 1/2" subcompact instead of both (either) though? I don't have any 3/8 impact sockets, and I think the 1/2" SC is basically the same size as the 3/8" SC?

That subcompact stubby impact wrench is surprisingly powerful. It easily zips off 150 ft lbs lug nuts. I recommend a max output or octane battery, it has significantly less power with a normal battery.

In general, I'd say you made the correct purchase. 3/8" sockets are a little more compact than 1/2" sockets, so that holds with the theme of a subcompact. In your specific situation, I guess the 1/2" might make a little more sense, but I'd suggest just getting a 3/8" set too. It's really nice to have a ratchet set up in 1/2" for stuff like 19mm and a 3/8" setup for 12mm. In most jobs I find I'd rather have both than keep switching sockets. I even get out a 1/4" ratchet for the 8mm and 10mm stuff.

The 1/2" and 3/8" are almost identical power (and in torque testing the 3/8" is actually negligibly more powerful) so there's no loss there.

I bought the subcompact a few days. It is tiny, in a good way! Bought it after doing a brake job that the caliper bracket bolts were tougher than I'm used to. My Octane 1/2" was too big for the space.

So I think the 3/8" subcompact is a great sidekick to go along with the mid torque octane 1/2" impact wrench.

I saw that too. Unforgivable. What was Ridgid thinking? Don't they test these things before putting them into production? I'd never buy that thing, and I own about 15 Ridgid 18v tools.

3/8 is better since the sockets are smaller since both have same power. Will be able to get in to smaller spaces. But yes you do need to get 3/8 sockets.

Why is the 1/2" subcompact never on sale?

Or just get a 3/8" - 1/2" adapter.

That could work, but isn't ideal because you lose some torque and compactness.
