Though the fastening modes may be very useful for some applications, I would personally prefer the diminutive size of their newer subcompact model for auto and small engine work.

Thanks for the post.
Suggested edits: replace "stubby" with "subcompact".
Replace "both" $79 with "each" $79.

I have both of these tools, I got the octane version with a battery for $99 first. Then I just had to see what the deal was with this tiny little subcompact. I like the subcompact better!

I am wondering if I should have just purchased the 1/2" subcompact instead of both (either) though? I don't have any 3/8 impact sockets, and I think the 1/2" SC is basically the same size as the 3/8" SC?
Just wanted to say I agree with the recommendation, but got busy with work (the job that actually pays me so I can afford all the ish I buy from SD posts). Title would have been a bit less confusing using the word "each"...

The above said, I own the stubby version (known officially as the sub compact) and it is really cool to have that much torque in such a compact impact wrench. $79 is def a good deal for brand new (esp when you compare it against Milwaukee).

One thing I'm still wondering, though, is what is the break away torque on the non-sub compact? I didn't see it listed. It has 100 ft lbs tightening torque in the forward position, but, again, the specs did not mention the break away torque.

I remember seeing 190 ft-lbs listed somewhere, but don't quote me on that.

I saw the "stubby" and thought awe crap they made another one I'll eventually want. Luckily, it's the subcompact.

On a disappointing note, Ridgid is finally releasing a powered ratchet and it sucks. The handle bends badly when using it.
It doesn't look to me like the handle bends. It's just the part the battery attaches to. For sure that doesn't scream 'quality' but you are meant to use it with your hand ahead of it, where the grip is.

It doesnt bend badly... It flexes a little on the battery section when trying to use the full length, pushing on the battery portion only, of the wrench is a crow bar. Its lame to do that... Thats like saying the battery sucks because it cracks when I use it has a hammer.

Aaaa I just got the 1/2" not too long ago, I don't need another impact gun. I just need a powered ratchet now, but now I'm tempted to get these too

Tempting to replace my ryobi
I got a battery converter adapter that allows me to use my Ridgid batteries on my older Ryobi tools. Got the adapter from eBay.

That could work, but isn't ideal because you lose some torque and compactness.
Actually, I'm fairly certain I came across a youtube video showing a 1/2" adapter on a 3/8" impact wrench actually increased the torque. I don't want to spread misinformation so I'll try to find that video and post a link.

Odd that the stubby would be more powerful than the standard compact tho, right? The sub compact has 225 ft lbs of breaking torque. As such, it doesn't seem there is much reason to buy the standard size over the stubby - right?

The Subcompact 3/8" impact was $35.99 on sale at DTO a couple weeks ago. Factory reconditioned though but the one I got looks new. It is just as powerful as my Milwaukee M12 Stubby but the top of it is smaller.

Why is the 1/2" subcompact never on sale?
The 1/2" and 3/8" makes the same power so there isn't much use for such a low torque 1/2". Better to keep subcompacts with 3/8" to fit in tight spaces and step up to a higher torque level for 1/2" when you need to bring out the big boy. The new DCF891 for example, easily has 2-3x the torque of this and can handle all you can throw at it for automotive work.

That is def a great deal. When I was at DTO, they either didn't have the stubby in Recon, or the price difference wasn't that much difft than "blemished." I think I bought the Blemished with a 20% discount or something. The DTO Recons look like new, but, when you're looking at Ridgid Recons, what sucks is that you have to give up the LFA warranty.

Now, with a Ryobi Recon, there brand new/blemished "only" have a 3 yr warranty. So, you're not giving up as much going form New to Recon with Ryobi. Still, $35.99 for the stubby is a steal.

If anyone has experience with the subcompact impact wrench on wheel lug nuts, could you comment on your likes/dislikes on it? I'd suspect that 225ft-lbs would be enough torque, but not sure how many "impacts" it'd take to actually remove the lug nut.

What car you are working on? My rav4 lug nuts are only 95 ft-lbs. the subcompact impact wrench is more than enough.

After owning the stubby and trying a few others, 3/8 is better than 1/2. If you are like me most of your impact sockets are 1/2 but at this level you don't need 1/2, let alone impact sockets.
