Skip this, buy a dutch oven and google Jim's no knead bread and thank me later
This is true, but heading into summer, I'm not a huge fan of having the oven at 450 or so for an hour.

I actually pulled out the bread machine I had given my mother twenty years ago. It's basically sat in a box all this time, but I plugged it in, threw in the ingredients, and just under four hours later had a loaf of bread without having raised the temperature in our kitchen at all.

I'm thinking about tossing in a tiny bit of vinegar to give it a sourdough tang next time.

What is the ROI like on this vs. buying bread at the market?

Is this a good prep item for the coming depression?
Calculating ROI on something like this isn't really a direct comparison to supermarket bread because your output is a fresh homemade loaf of bread without preservatives.

But as a simple example, a 2lb loaf of bread generally uses about 4 cups of flour. You can buy a 5lb bag (20 cups) of bread flour for $4. For a basic white bread the only other things you are likely adding is a small amount of sugar, salt, butter/oil, milk, and yeast. The cost for those other ingredients is going to be a few pennies at most since you use so little of them. So at 80 cents of flour and a few pennies of everything else you are looking at about $1 per loaf. And that's assuming you aren't buying any ingredients in bulk, which you should because it could cut costs by more than half.

So if you go through a loaf of bread per week at $3/loaf at the supermarket that is $156/year on bread. Making it at home with a machine, not accounting for buying ingredients on sale or in bulk and assuming $1/loaf you are at $52/year. So a savings year over year of $104 if you buy this machine, giving you a 1 year ROI.

Again though this is overly simplistic, because a homemade loaf like this doesn't really cost $3. It is more akin to a loaf you'd buy at a local bakery. Those usually run $5-10 depending on what they are and where you are. So in that case your ROI is quite a bit faster.

Probably a good bread maker. I started making bread in 1985 with dough hooks on a mixer. I've had several beadmakers since. Some unused in a faded box for $10 at thrift stores. Eh... we'll pass.

Does anyone also experience the crust being hard on breads from these bread maker machines?

I purchased my Breadman breadmaker 12 years ago. I haven't made that many loaves over the years, but nothing is better than homemade toasted & buttered herb bread with homemade chicken noodle soup on a chilly winter day. But I mainly use it to make pizza dough, usually monthly. One of my better purchases.

Further ahead to purchase a KitchenAid stand mixer. Granted they are more expensive than this bread machine, but are much more versatile. The mixer comes with a dough hook for making dough. Works great. There are many attachments available. Check out the KitchenAid website.
We have a stand mixer, but our Panasonic bread machine gets far more use.
Wake up in the morning to the smell of a fresh loaf of bread, slather on some butter for morning goodness.

An alternative to the oven is using charcoal briquettes outside, placing them under and on top of a cast iron dutch oven. Not trying to refute any of your points on heating up the kitchen in summer.... Just giving you another option. I've made that no knead bread with jalapenos and cheddar mixed in and it was successful no matter the heat source.

Arguably a breadmaker does not require a monthly subscription fee. Yet, I suppose, with the way things seem to be going these days.
