Great router. I've been using the RT-AC68P, which is essentially the same thing, as my workhorse router for the past 6 years and it's still running great.

I only recently ordered a RT-AX86U to start the upgrade to wifi 6. I plan on keeping this older AC router around as a wired access point node though since it's still running well.

Why not flash both routers with ASUSWRT MERLIN software and use the AI-Mesh feature to increase your overall range (as well as be able to use as a wired access point where needed)?

Recommended to keep the nodes with the stock Asus firmware.

Why??

With the Stock ASUS firmware, you're stuck with things like old (insecure) protocols (SMB-1 & FTP) and other quirks that Merlin fixes!

I'm curious as to what stock does better than Merlin?? TIA

The mesh portion is closed source and it is not known any conflicts with Merlin enhancements, so unless there is a specific need to run it (on the nodes, not your main router) the recommendation is stock.

This ^^^^ is a perfect example of why stock firmware can be dangerous.

Someone on the outside could FTP into their network & hunt for non-secure devices such as USB connected hard drives & go through/download data.

Some people scan for open ports (ex FTP) on the internet to find things of interest to pilfer through.

Do the people who TD deals as "Unable to replicate deal" realize that deals expire, and that they can report them as expired?

Wouldn't that require having FTP enabled on the router?
