Has anyone put these in a mesh? Have the giant spider AC5300 and curious if when using an Ethernet backhaul if they would be tri-band with both 5ghz networks available.

I have these in mesh with ethernet backhaul; the ONLY way to get wifi 6 for clients is to use ethernet backhaul. otherwise they will use the wifi 6 band by default for the wireless backhaul, leaving you with dual band wifi5 for clients.

it's a better solution than dual band mesh without ethernet, but it still feels like you're only getting a fraction of what this thing can do if you don't use ethernet. so it's hard to be too critical of that decision, and this unit is generally available for a decent price.

I will say the only problem i've had is that the WAN port on the node I had setup as the main router connected to my modem randomly began to cap speed at 100mbps. generally positive experience with ASUS RMA, they let me send in just the one unit so I could keep my network going, even though it came in a "two pack". i've always found vendors to be hit or miss with this kind of stuff (I will always say good things about gskill for swapping the bad stick in a 2 stick ram kit and letting me keep the other, for example), so I will give credit to them for making it easier to swap than I had anticipated

I use an Asus Onhub, which is about to be discontinued from Google.

Will these fix the annoying problem where it occasionally doesn't do a great job at reconnecting as I walk around the house? I have 4 onhubs and it still causes issues.

Nope, that's entirely up to your settings.

Asus does have the ability to limit the dB before it will kick clients off, but most clients are stubborn and that's where the issue lies.

The only real solution is to have zero overlap, which is almost impossible in most homes.

Cool well reviewed units, originally they were buggy but that got worked out with updates. These units are on the older side now, but still will work for anyone that has speeds between 500Mbps-1Gbps. The top wireless speeds to expect on a single wifi device with proper wifi 6 client is around 600ish Mbps from most reviews. Even though this unit does not have a multi gig or 2.5Gbps port it does support link aggregation and if I recall correctly on WAN/Port4 so you can utilize over a 1Gbps connection through a mixed of wired and wireless clients.

Slightly disappointing the range on these guys which probably has to do with their size is not equivalent to one standard router, so expect shorter range if comparing only one unit to a older full sized router. Also for some reason this is one of the few wifi 6 routers that the 2.4ghz band shows barely any improvement even with proper clients when using in a mesh. I think with latest firmware there might be a improvement but have not seen it personally.

For Asus this might be one of the cheapest ways to get a triband mesh going, but as a mesh this is one of their slowest cause of the routers radio configuration. These do make great individual stand alone routers and are capable of 900Mbps on the 5Ghz 2 band when used without mesh.

I have 3 on Ethernet backhaul and they've been awesome. Covering 8000+ sqft no problem

Yes it would in AiMesh but you would not want the RTAC3100 to be the primary you would want to setup one of these guys as the primary and your original router as a satellite.

I just got a Linksys MX8000 from Amazon 3rd party, I got it for only $150. It is older model I believe but I still feel little sketchy about why it was so cheap.

Should I return it and get this Asus?
