For those wondering about size, this bike is a 54cm top tube, meaning that it's likely to be a proper fit for riders that are about 5'6"-5'10" realistically.

Also, it looks like they went to a 44mm head tube on the current version with a ZS headset (the prior version was a 34mm with an external cup headset), so it should be able to to take a tapered fork with a conversion headset.
Seems a bit much for a Walmart Mongoose.
The big issue with this bike is that it was probably assembled by a teenage Walmart employee who has no expertise assembling bikes. Unless you know how to inspect and tune the bike yourself, be prepared to spend another $50 to $100 at you local bike shop for them to do it.

Good bike for the price. Nice finish too. They definitely put some thought into this bike and looked at the current gravel bike design. The frame reminds me of the Canyon Grail. I'd just be worried about sizing, in one picture, it shows the size as a 60cm, but cannot confirm. Now I am 6' and a 54cm (In Cannondale's sizing) or a 56cm in Canyon fits me. If I was in the market, I'd pull the trigger and try.

Not bad for the price!
Probably not worth much upgrading, but ok to ride as is. Looking around the internets, frame size is marked as "medium", so if you're tall or short it might not work for you. Adding different sized stem or handlebars could help with the fit.

super tempting. but once you replace the shifters (which I know will suck) or break a spoke ill regret not spending more upfront.

I've read the Microshift brifters are halfway decent for the money. It's a Taiwanese company so it's not total junk. Obviously if you're used to Shimano 105, Ultegra, DuraAce then this is probably crap. But bikes with those groupsets are easily starting at $1200-1500 even from BikesDirect.

I think my complaint would be the freewheel instead of cassette. Sorta locks you into 7 speeds. And the bump on the top tube is little weird as well.

Seems similar to this Kent, which is $30 less:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Kent-G.../165760666

But you lose the Kenda tires, internal cabling, some accessory mounts, and the strange hydroformed hump.

How does Mongoose rank in brand? Better or worse than Scwinn?

Mongoose is terrible quality and even worst support, If you want a disposable bike this is a good deal.
Rightnow i'm stuck with a brand-new 29' Mongoose Excursion which cost me $185 at Walmart and the replacement rear tire is $120 from the company.

It's a free wheel. This this is disposable. You can't replace/upgrade the drivetrain.

You can, if you upgrade the rear wheel (or rear hub and respoke), but once you start looking into costs for briefters ontop of the drivetrain and the rear wheel (or hub), the cost is probably prohibitive.

This is a bike to buy and use for what it is, not dreaming about "upgrading" to what it was not meant to be. If you don't have all the $ down, just don't bike an expensive bike, or look into financing one vs. upgrading piece by piece.

The bike should be ok for mild fire-roads w/o extended descents (would not trust the brakes much for steep singletrack/prolonged fast descents, unless you are super light).
