Also, it looks like they went to a 44mm head tube on the current version with a ZS headset (the prior version was a 34mm with an external cup headset), so it should be able to to take a tapered fork with a conversion headset.

Probably not worth much upgrading, but ok to ride as is. Looking around the internets, frame size is marked as "medium", so if you're tall or short it might not work for you. Adding different sized stem or handlebars could help with the fit.

I think my complaint would be the freewheel instead of cassette. Sorta locks you into 7 speeds. And the bump on the top tube is little weird as well.

But you lose the Kenda tires, internal cabling, some accessory mounts, and the strange hydroformed hump.
Rightnow i'm stuck with a brand-new 29' Mongoose Excursion which cost me $185 at Walmart and the replacement rear tire is $120 from the company.

This is a bike to buy and use for what it is, not dreaming about "upgrading" to what it was not meant to be. If you don't have all the $ down, just don't bike an expensive bike, or look into financing one vs. upgrading piece by piece.
The bike should be ok for mild fire-roads w/o extended descents (would not trust the brakes much for steep singletrack/prolonged fast descents, unless you are super light).
